Which Contego?

M4 isn't stainless, right? You need to break the bond by soaking the blade in regular old white vinegar (of all things). I let it go for many hours (at least overnight, maybe 24,been a while), but know that I did get a bit of pitting here and there. You can probably expect better if you just keep your eye on it.

I took a sharpened piece of g10 and sandpaper to it to remove the coating.

I like the method because you get to keep the etched wording and logo. I thought about sand/media blasting or abrasion but I didn't want to lose the etch. Following what some of the Busse guys do, I'd have taken a little ferric chloride to the etch before the soak. The coating will protect the parts you don't want etched, so no need for a resist. Just swab some fc on the etching a few times to deepen it then rock and roll. I didn't know about this when I did mine. Even so, the etches look fine.
