Which Design Would You Pick?????

I'd take the top one in the first pic. Looks like the most useful for what I'd need to do.
#2 pick would be the bottom one on the second pic (camp tramp), that's a classic, and oft-used design.

first one on the second page, not recurve so would be easy to sharpen and has enough bulk to be a formidable chopper

I have high speed light so it's only a hair faster than dial up. I went for a shower and when I came back they had both downloaded, not that it will help you any.

I would probably be happy to have any of them if I were to be in a scenario such as you propose. To be able to actually pick one over the other, though, I would want more information about them and even then, I'm not not that blade savvy. I guess it comes from being an old geezer, but I'm used to making do with whatever I have, and to have any of those knives - would be a bonus!

I do have a bit of a preference for recurves, though, because of my great affection for my Cincinatti Machax, so that wouldn't put me off.

Let us know what you choose. :)

I'll take the top one in the second picture. Made of INFI Steel. Accompanied by one 1 -Lg. Black plastic leaf bag, 1-needle, 2- hooks, a metal cup and 100ft. of nylon line/50lb test, flint. And I''ll see ya in 30 days!:D

Bottom one of pic one in a Fallkniven laminate steel: We know tough knives can be made from that and I need it to defend itself from corrosion – I need to use it in all sorts of things for a month. I need to befriend it not nanny it.

The recurves are out. Aside from any practical considerations I'm not a fan. I don't need to be thinking that of my ally.

The SW is out. Aside from the practical considerations I'm just not a fan. I have arrived at the point at which I can't hear the word Busse without thinking of a christian movement. That may well be unreasonable, but facts don't always do what I want them to. It faceplants because I'm supposed to be enjoying this trip right?

I don't know what the penultimate one on pic two is. It might be fantastic or it could be a cardboard stooge for all I know. Fail.

The topmost ones on both pics look pukka. Compared to the one I selected though the blades look very broad. Whist that is going to help them a bunch with other things, I think the more narrow width is going to be better for all the chisel cutting and carving when I'm often going to want both thumbs on the spine. Further, the one I picked has a more pronounced beak than the other two. And as a matter of speculation also looks to offer a better grip over the other two. As in, it looks the least likely of the three to have any tendency to rotate in the hand.

Second from the bottom 2nd link. I like the ridge between 1st and 2nd finger. Less chance of knife slipping while chopping and I would be doing lots of chopping I am thinking INFI btw. Triple connection on handle. Looks like a good chopper.

I always thought I had unique taste but my eyes were drawn to the bottom of page 1.
Looks simple, comfortable and sturdy.
"My old Pappy used to say" if it looks good it will work good. That knife, to me, looks good.

Either of the top two in the first pic. I'm a sucker for the SOLO and with a cylindrical guyot or kleen kanteen bottle and some other things the recurve can be maintained by me with little effort. Definitely INFI.

I like em all but I guess I am a little biased :D I guess I would go with 1 of the top two in the 2nd pic. The SOLO recurve was designed as a "1 knife only" kinda blade. It works well as a utility knife and a chopper. The recurve isn't so drastic that it can't be sharpened using most field sharpeners. I have easily sharpened one on a 2in wide DMT bench stone :) The top one in the 2nd pic was a try at taking the Solo a little different direction design wise but they both can do the same jobs. The Hudson Bay Camp Knife is another do it all pattern that has a bit towards being more of a utility design where slicing and piercing are concerned. It still chops nice though. Makes me smile reading all the nice comments from folks :)

It was my intention to get people to think "Design" first--and then maker.(Be that Factory or Custom Made)

Everyone knows I'm a rather LARGE fan of your work--but not because of how your knives "LOOK"--but how they "CUT" and "FEEL"..(yes they look good-but that is not why I ever buy them)

I teach Martial Arts when I'm not being a Doctor-and usually have many people test knives when we go hiking .What usually happens is people fall in love with how a Knife "LOOKS" and then expect it to cut great because they "WANT IT TO".(especially novice knive users).

What I liked most about the answers I got here in this post is "WHY" someone liked or did not like the knife they chose.

Plus that we all realize(or at least "should") that what "WORKS" for us might or might not "WORK" for someone else.

Also(and those of you with a lot of experience know this)--there is NO WAY you could choose the Correct knife for this TEST without first holding and cutting/chopping something first....to see how well the one you "wanted" actually "FIT" your hand.

I'm sure EVERYONE here has had the experience of ordering or seeing a knife on the forums that FELT much different than we expected it to once we held it.(the TRADE section is full of those)

My point??

We are all on the QUEST to find not "one" perfect knife....but AS MANY AS WE CAN GET.

What might be PERFECT for ME--might be a waste of time for someone else.

But you all gotta admit-----once the knife bug "bites you"--the addiction is hard to overcome...:D

Please keep your responses coming

Dr.Bill
