Which Fallkniven fixed to buy?

I have both the Izula and the F1. I am very pleased with both. I think the F1 is plenty large enough for everything except maybe a hatchet substitute.

As far as sharpening it, (at the risk of being tortured) I use my Edgepro. My
F1 is Razor sharp.

The S1 looks to be a better size compromise, but it looks bulkier and not as durable.

If you are thinking it is less durable than the F1, I can assure you that is not the case. Every bit as durable, and with a slighter thicker blade, maybe even more so.

Kevin your advice just rocks. I guess I'm going to just have to bite the bullet and decide which one I want. This would be much easiler if the Izula wasn't such a fine knife.

Sadly though, I don't think it is really feasible to use for wood processing/fire making without expending a large amount of energy.

I suppose the question I should be asking is: Is there a better place to buy an F1/S1 than Knifeworks?

Well, it seems like you were partially right Nicklas. I spoke to Peter Hjortberger and he said the name is in fact derivated from the combination av three Fs: Flygvapnet (Air Force), Fällkniven and Formula 1!!!

The first batch F1:s was issued to the Royal Swedish Air Force in August 1995. The general public was able to purchase this model in the spring of 1996.

The previous (incorrect) information presented by me was given to me by Eric Hjortberger, the son of Peter.

All,

I've been looking for a survival knife to take with me backpacking. .... The question is, which one?...I'm looking to keep the weight as low as possible,
Also possibly considering a RAT-4/ESEE-4....

I have a RAT-4 and like it. Would not carry it while hiking/backpacking though because it's far too heavy for my needs. Prefer something along the lines of the BM 940 or Spyderco Caly-3, which run around 3 oz. Always found matches work well for starting fires and they're much lighter too.

So I think I decided on the Bark River...but unfortunately no one has a model that I am interested in (Aurora, Northstar, Fox River, Highland Special).

Really annoying.

I guess I'm just going to go for the F1. =/

So I guess the question now is...which sheath for the F1? Zytel or Leather?

The leather sheath holds the blade more securely. The Zytel sheath allows the blade to rattle about which dulls the edge.

Other than that both work well.

Hey freq18hz,

one thing that's not true is that the izula and the F1 are comparable size wise, it's a world of difference. Check out my vid where you can see the izula and the F1 cutting some wood and see that the size difference is very large indeed.

Best video ever! :

Zyhano, I've seen your video before actually. They look pretty similar in size bladewise, obviously the F1 is an inch longer, and has a lot more handle real-estate.

So does the Zytel sheath really suck? This thread is the first I've ever heard of people complaining about it...it dulls the knife? I've heard its much lighter and stronger.

Anyone else care to chime in?

I have the Izula, F1, S1 and WM1
Also Zytel. Falkniven leather and aftermarket sheaths for the F1 and S1, and Kydex for the F1

I was initially against the Zytel sheaths but they have grown on me. They are the lightest possible, lowest profile and no maintenance. if they get wet - the water just pours out. They are wll enough aired that the knives will not coorode because they are in the sheath. Also when on the belt they keep the knife accessible without dangling down or getting in the way. there is also pretty good retention with just the clip in the sheath even without suign the strap. This means the knife can comfortably be pulled in and out of the sheath for multiple small jobs one handed easily , and the strap put on when travelling or other and what it doubly secured

I'd consider the Izula to be more of a match to the WM1 than the F1

Overall the F1 is the knife I would like most to have to wear and use all day every day, for overall useability it is hard to go past the F1. The F1 in Zytel would sit on the belt or in a cargo pocket and almost be unnoticeable but at hand when needed. That said the Izula and S1 would be a good combination - the S1 is still only as long as a steak knife but has just enough weight to start thinking about swinging it rather than just slicing.

Hmm I may think of putting a slice of Neuroprene in the bottom of the zytel sheath

Try one of the smaller Northern Lights, they look simply fantastic.

while i agree they look pretty, i rekon it's a lot of money to pay just for a stacked leather handle, which is essentially the only difference.

the F1 is basically an Idun
S1 = Frey
A1 = Njord
A2 = Odin.

if the Northern Lights knives were in the funky 3G steel, then i'd get one. but i can't justify the extra cash outlay just for the handle.

(ok, the NL series is fully convex ground while the base series has a bevel in there. i seriously doubt you'll notice any difference in performance between an S1 and a Frey)
