Which hunting knife patern you prefer?

Very cool codger! Will it replace the sharpfinger?

I am generally a two or three knife man. I think this is what kids nowdays call a "system". The Weeks SPK Sharpfinger custom may be paired with this knife when heavy skinning and butchering chores are involved. But I'll never put down my Old Timer favorites entirely. After thirty or fourty years, they've earned my respect. I wonder how many people here still mostly use a 30-40 year old knife? Or a 100 year old pattern? They still work as well as ever. And I think Webster would like the Stifle knife and much as Henry would like the Weeks knife.

Speaking of sharpfingers Codger, I recently acquired a clone I wanted to show you. This is an old pic from BHK I believe

Neat! That one is a bit different than the BHK Clipper too. What is that blade finish? Just stippled from the etch? Nice. It has a nice plunge line and safety choil like the Clipper but not exactly the same.

I prefer a drop point for deer, particularly this design Joe Hoover made for me, yet this Clyde Fisher is awfully nice as well with its long slim blade.

semi-skinners also work really well, such as this Stuart Smith and Beretta

Yes, it's stippled from the etch and has a dark grey color from the acid too. The spine is polished all the way around.

For shape and size, I think it's closer to the original SF than the clipper.

I also like this old Schrade 498 with a point modified to a semi-skinner or drop point. Works just fine.

that is a great add, thanks for posting

The old patterns and old steels still work as well as ever. That blade pattern dates back to 1953 with the Schrade Walden 148. The '49ers were an update in 1973 of the old patterns. That is a 1973 company flyer sent to dealers.

I've always been a fan of the basic drop point style for most everything. 2.5-3.5" blade is my sweet spot. Though I am working on my own version of a sharpfinger for fun.

You will share the project, right?

OAL 5 3/4"? That is how it measures to my hand. One of your fellow craftsmen is currently making a Sharpfinger riff for me in the other direction, slightly larger than the original 7 1/4" OAL. I love seeing these things. Please link me to a WIP or completion thread when you get a round tuit?

Yeah, when I get it all done I'll let you know, that's about the right size if I recall. Just still up in the air about handle material choice. Opinions? Natural or synthetic?

Being an old Codger, I am partial to natural appearing handle materials, even if they are synthetic.

I have been thinking of using some hunter green micarta like phenolic with bronze bolsters or possibly ebonizing some mesquite and going bolsterless. I will figure it out soon though and take some good pics for you.

my schrade 498 has no markings on the butt. does that mean it is pre'73?

Hard to say. Quite possible very late in production. I haven't really done a study on these patterns to know the range of hallmark stamps. I wouldn't think earlier as they were not introdue=ced to the market until 1973 and the hallmarks, as you see, were a part of the "Benchmade" mantra associated with them.

Cool. We have taken up too much space in this thread already on this pattern, so when you are ready, start a new one in Traditional for modern customs on the Sharpfinger pattern, M'kay?

^^ agreed.

Here is another one of mine, this one is based on a design of mine and made by Daniel Fairly. My original design was more fighter with a straight raised clip, but in his version it evolved into this, which is reminiscent of a sharp finger. This one is just about 7.5" iirc. Chisel ground 52100. Can't wait to try this one out on some critter!
