Great topic and have enjoyed reading a lot the responses. For me, the query is a bit like the greatest NBA players of all time (since we would have to pick one from SY, SW, and B). Easy to go with MJ there, although I think a strong argument could be made for the Big O, especially taking into consideration differences in the eras). But it is hard to really compare a big post player (PF/C) versus a point guard versus a versatile swing player (SF/SG). Each had very different functions, tasks, physiques (usually), and skill sets, equalling different expectations. Of course, great players are versatile to a degree regardless of position (example: The Dream was way up in steals for several years, quite an accomplishment for a C). But, it is fun to debate, so...
I am sticking to SW, because I just like those knives better for what I do. I have quite a few Busses, and they are high quality, but the really seem to be focused on really thick blades, not my particular focus. For mu uses, I like the steel better than INFI. And, I have only had one SY, a Scrapper 4. Great blade, but didn't seem to do anything my Coot or Bog Dog couldn't. Out the SW, my favorite big un, from a BR, a BG, a Rat Mastiff (my first), and an SBR is..the SBR, which I truly regret selling. Handles like the wind, slices like lightening, chips like thunda. Res C rules on a big un, and the knife is just plain sexy to boot.
That would be my favorite PF/C, big guy. My PG? Had a Safari Skinner, but not enamored of the blade design. Had an Inficoot, and several HRLM and a 2nd gen HR, plus a couple more I don't remember with clarity, but most were just too "heavy duty" for a small blade for me personally. Would love to get a Solution and thin it a bit and change the grind, because it looks like a great blade. If I can, may change my mind, but right now, the small blade (a little long for small at around 4") is the D2 Bog Dog (if I ever find it again). Handles well, good steel, well designed grips, good blade and edge geometry for my uses for that length blade.
And the swing position, the intermediate do-it-all? The Ratmandeux LE, slightly customized. What a blade! It is a knife for cutting, not chopping, but I have every faith in it being able to make a shelter and split wood in a fix. Slices very well, great for cooking chores and maybe not a dedicated skinner, but will do the work. And, I never want to see, much less be in, another knife fight (that's why God made the .45), but it feels like made-for-combat in the hand, and the guards would protect your flesh in a fix. Right now, my all-time favorite blade. Again, after my CT arrives (my first) I will change my mind, but we will see.
Hope no offense taken at my liberties with the specs for purposes of playing with a clean conscience, and I will try to add pics of my RMDeux later (and my BD, if I find it this weekend!).
