Which is the best sitcom on TV?

Best Ever- Seinfeld
Best Now- Everybody Loves Raymond
Honorable Mention- Just Shoot Me
Best Nostalgic- Northern Exposure
Best Appalling (But Love It)- Married With Children

One from the hometown, soon to be on cable in US- Kath and Kim.
(You won't understand one word in four, however, it's scripted in Aussie frontier gibberish, like Paul Hogan imitating Gabby Hayes)

Payback for cultural imperialism :)

Hey Gary-
Thanks for Soap & Get Smart- Good ones. Anybody remember Fernwood Tonight w/ Martin Mull?

I'm glad to see that no one has mentioned Friends yet, or if they did, I missed it. My entire sense of humor has been shaped by Seinfeld, Simpsons, Futurama, and the Family Guy. Great stuff

Chris

I LOVE King of Queens, she's not a bitch, she is a Hottie and shes just sassy! paul

The sitcom is in my opinion perhaps the purest form of televison, the one thing that can't be duplicated in other media.

That being said, my favorites all time, no surprises here:
Married with Children--my "desert island" show if I can have only one to take along with me
Seinfeld
MASH, at least the first three or maybe four years
Get a Life
Fawlty Towers
All in the Family, again the first few years
Addams Family
Odd Couple--how could I forget that one!
Are You Being Served? (Thanks, G2)
Brittas Empire

Currently
Bernie Mac--once you get past his pronunciation, maybe one of the best family shows ever
King of Queens
Simpsons--in some respects maybe the greatest of them all

My all time favorites include Taxi, All In The Family, Cheers, The Odd Couple, The Honeymooners, and Seinfeld-- and probably in that order.

I have never, and I mean NEVER, seen a sitcom whose writing quality even came close to approaching that of Taxi's. It was, and is, a truly brilliant creation, and did as good a job of combining pure humor and genuine poignancy as did All In The Family, except it had a greater variety of funny characters.

Taxi is in a league of its own, and will remain so perhaps forever.

The only modern sitcoms I like are Everybody Loves Raymond, and King of Queens.

I really appreciate ELR because it is consistently good and its humor is often quite subtle. So much of its humor depends on actually knowing the characters, and the variety of relationships that occur between each two characters. It is similar to the venerable All In The Family in this way.

When TKOQ is on, it is laugh-out-loud hilarious. The main character of Doug reminds me exactly of my good high school buddy, Norm. And Jerry Stiller's character of the father-in-law is great because he is unabashedly the exact same guy that was portrayed as Costanza's father in Seinfeld.

I admit it... I'm a Nick at Nite fan! :o Oh the shame... Three's Company and Mama's Family raid my TV nightly (or really early in the morning because I'm an insomniac.) Other than that, my TV's tuned to Animal Planet or BBC America.

I almost forgot one of the funniest shows ever - anybody remember these guys? (Yanks only, you Brits will find it too easy) (And no clicking on "properties", that's cheating)

The Young Ones IIRC.

If we are crossing the pond then Faulty Towers gets my nod.

And the best thing about the scene is that originally Rev. Jim's line was only supposed to be said twice, but Christopher Lloyd and Jeff Conaway improvised and kept it going with his response getting slower and slower each time. Great stuff!

In Living Color (Two Snaps Up!)
Bob Newhart - 1970's - Saturday Night - CBS
The Jeffersons
