I recently stated in another thread that I would prefer my 16.5 WW II to a .357 for bear defense. I think I stand a pretty good chance against any animal no larger than some of my friends- assuming I can get to my knife before brer bear gets to me! Fortunately, as a martial artist, I can tell you that "incoming" now moves slower than it used to. As one of my old instructors would say, keep fighting until the threat goes away, or the lights go out.
With the Buck 110 story, I heard that the bear went and lay down after being stabbed perhaps 70 times in the face. The hunter then retrieved his rifle and shot it.
