Which Knife Company (IYO) Produces The BEST Edge Fresh Out Of The Box…?

I would say Spyderco and Cold Steel, but CS looses it's edge as soon as you cut a piece of paper with it, and you will never get that edge back.

To be honest I have not been impressed with any edge out of the box.

Id say my yoshihiro yanagi is about as sharp as Ive seen out of a box.

The only knife I've ever been able to whittle hair with out of the box was, oddly enough, an Esee 5. I've bought Benchmades, Spydercos, Cold Steels, Bucks, Kershaws, ZTs, etc. Nothing was ever that sharp.

You must have some thick hair ;) I could understand BM, but Spydies and ZT's

My answer will be the same as the last dozen or so times this thread came up:
Spyderco, Emerson, and a handfull of Benchmades.

It would be remiss to not mention Hogue in this, I've never seen a company that does such perfectly consistent edges. Never mind the fact that they're almost perfectly mirror polished out of the box, and can tree top hair. I wouldn't doubt that 90% of Hogue's knives in users hands will not be brought back to the same level of sharpness after being used as they were initially. I don't know if it's a factor of their manufacturing plant being smaller and thus more time can be devoted to each knife, but it's truly remarkable.

Every Emerson or Kershaw I've bought has been consistently sharp and even.

I only own one Hogue, but I did handle several and the edges were all on par with CRK.

I have been happy with factory edges from Spyderco, BM and CRK. I do usually touch up/improve the edge a little on all these knives before the knife really needs to be sharpened. That said, I have a William Henry that I think is the sharpest knife I have ever received straight from the factory.

Now now, let's not exaggerate, not even poorly treated 420J2 is that bad.

I've has good experiences with edge retention and sharpening on my Cold Steel knives, and I own knives in every steel they use currently (except CPM 3V).

Cold Steel in folders, flat ground. I've cut myself with them and didn't even know I had a relatively deep cut till I saw the blood. Fixed, Fherman. They get that 3v so sharp and it doesn't lose it quickly.

Best I've held out of the box so far was my Mcusta tactility.

Put all other brands I've encountered so far to shame. (even if Spyderco and the others do a great job)

I have yet to see any knife from a factory be sharp enough to 'tree top' hairs, some comfortably shave arm hair, but that's it.

Agree with JKUlysses. My first and obvious choice is Spyderco. It might be that full flat grind blade I don't know. I just put up this video for some random person who tried to knock the RR Mini Trapper I picked up. Person never tried one yet wanted to talk trash. So I posted this video not 30 seconds ago RR1381 out of the box. This is a $13 slipjoint mind you! Not the best of steels...but who cares!!!! It's $13 and shaved hair when I got it. Gadsden logo was like icing on the cake.

I would have to say Kershaw but for the price they cost I was very surprised at how sharp Rough Riders come!

ive only bought a few Moras, but id have to give them the nod for fixed blades and folders id say Spyderco

Spyderco has been great to me, I've got quite a few of their knives and all came sharp. I recently started getting into Protechs, and the two I've bought so far (Godfather and TLR3 Integrity) were very sharp out of the box. I like Benchmades a lot, but the edges (at least in my experience) are a bit hit or miss. All of mine were well ground, but some needed a few minutes on the strop or an extra fine stone to get shaving sharp.

However, I still think that the king of consistency in folding knives is good ol Victorinox. They make millions of knives and manage to deliver all of them with a nice sharp edge and good fit and finish.
