Which knife would you carry for feild dressing

I think you made a good choice for an economical hunting knife. I was never a big Buck 110 guy (have a couple however) and favored the old Schrades over them. Probably had something to do with the Buck steel hardness back then. I picked up a Puma SGB Elk Hunter with a stag handle. This is Puma's budget line. It would be a pretty nice blade for deer hunting or larger game (under $100). The fact that it is reportedly assembled in China turns me off a bit, but it still is a pretty nice blade.

Tradition requires me to ALWAYS begin my Deer field dressing with my first "good" knife - the 1969 era Buck 110. A Puma SGB Deer hunter and a SGB Elk Hunter complete the tasks. For hogs, I use a utility knife for the skin and a Gerber Paracord knife for the rest. That Paracord retains an edge better on hogs than anything else I've tried.

The Vanguard was designed expressly for field dressing. I carry it and a BK2 strapped to my backpack for hacking the pelvic bone.

I have tried several combinations and I think so far the 110 and vanguard are the best combo.the bk2 does better than expected I will be pairing it with the 110 next

Hi everyone. Was just curious which knife everyone prefers for feild dressing deer between the bk2, buck endeavor & buck 119 special. Has anyone used any of theese 3 knives? How well did they perform? Which would be the best choice for skinning?

I've cleaned squirrels with my BK2 just to say I've done it...

...but it's not a great choice for small game or large. You would be almost infinitely better off with something like a BK11 or BK14.

best field dressing would have to be my haley heath ergohunter with gut hook stays sharp easy to hold and cleans easy

I have used a Boker Stag Handled Drop Point on deer and it works well. My current favorite is the Outdoor Edge Razor-Blaze. It went through Elk with no issues and it was easy to swap out the blades so I didn't have to resharpen in the field.

Just ordered a buck vangaurd and a 110. Will try both first dog season. Ill order a few more to try second season

You're going to be well served by those two blades man. The Vanguard is an excellent field-dressing blade. I'd like to see a run of them in something like CPM20CV.

Schrade-Walden Old Timer 150T Deerslayer and a S-W Sharpfinger make a great kit.

I've always liked the look of the Buck Vanguard, but I have an old Cold Steel Master Hunter that I carry on every hunting trip. I have a Buck 110, but I usually carry the smaller plastic grip model (can't remember which one it is) that I bought as my first knife almost 25 years ago.

My main skinner is a Benchmade Saddle Mountian Skinner. That said, last year I actually did a whole deer with a Delica 4 when I forgot to pack my hunting knives. Lol.

I've carried a Buck 105 for the past several years. Only field dressed two deer with it, but skinned & butchered about half a dozen. Worked very well.
Oddly, I field dressed my first buck with a Spyderco Sage 1. Which worked just fine, But I would't recommend it. :)

I also use a buck 105 primarily.. Except this year, had to use a Condor Mini Bushlore... Made me feel like an idiot for forgetting my 105 at home haha. Got the job done but it wasn't my best work..

i'm NO hunter :-) But the Steel Will Druid Knife (240) seems like it would do what you want nicely:

Of your listed choices I would prefer the Vanguard.

My deer harvesting tool load out has changed from season to season over the last several years, but once I get the deer home I have been using a dedicated skinner (Queen D2) to take their coats off and a Victorinox boning knife to put them in the freezer. I'm also a big devotee of the Butt Out tool and a pelvis saw to keep from popping the bladder. That lets me use a shorter blade for dressing because I don't have to go all the way around the anus to cut it free.

This year I used a 5" SYCKO Elmax and accidentally gave myself a pretty good cut while I was cutting away the diaphragm from the chest wall because I wasn't expecting the tip of my knife blade to be as far from my hand as it was. This only reinforces my belief that a deer knife really only needs to be 3.5" to 4" long to do all you need.

Here's a picture from a few years ago. The knife I used to field dress in this picture was an Entrek. I don't exactly remember the model but I think it's either the Companion or the Badger. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I just picked up a crtk ken onion skinner and while I haven't had the chance to take it huning, I like it a lot more than I thought I would, I honesty can't find a fault with it other than the fact that the sheath is a little cheap

The blade is just about the perfect lenght, its long enough that its not small but short enough that I can reach the point with my index finger along the spine and the shape should work well for skinning or gutting

I was looking for the best hunting knife for the price and I think this one is pretty hard to beat, bohler k110 is supposed to be a form of d2 and at $40-50 its a steal, most of the knives I saw that were in the same price range used much softer steels, though some might actually prefer that in a hunting knife

Reading the crkt spiel about the blade will tell you how much time went into designing the blade and when you have the knife in hand, it shows
