Which knives/styles do you plain dislike? For no real reason, rubs ya wrong, design, steel, handle, blade-shapes, brands. Judgement-free opinions.

Spyderco. I'm scared to death of the needle-fine tips on most of their stuff.

Tried some things from the Byrd line, because of the more meaty blades, and couldn't get over the thumb ramp. Good knives, good ergos up to that point, just not for me.

The other one isn't even a "dislike". I understand what Chris and Tim are trying to do. They've tried to live up to Antoine de Saint-Exupery's maxim, and I respect them for it. I've lost interest in Titanium framelocks with drop points and thumb ramps, at any price point, and while the Sebenza and it's kin are undoubtedly more than the sum of their parts, I'm not excited enough by the parts, to pay the required sum.

I hate to say it, because they’re crazy popular around here, but Spyderco’s do absolutely nothing for me. I know they’re built well, I know people love them, but the first thing I see on them is that big ol’ thumb hole, which is just too goofy looking for me.

Regarding knives and shapes: I don't like coatings, thumb studs, waves, tantos + spantos, recurves, linerless folders, and rat-tail tang fixed. Now from my photos you might notice that there are some exceptions to these rules, depending on how much I like the rest of the knife.

Regarding knife talk, the most disgusting thing (to me!) is "buttery smooth". Creates a picture (and smell) of an old piece of butter somebody forgot. I don't much care about rope or box cutting tests, "drop shut" action, the terms tactical and bush-craft knives, etc.

I hate chips. I hate lock stick, even the smallest. And an expensive knife better be centered (or centerable).

So there ... other than that I'm pretty flexible :)

I don't like acrylic scales, or the long blade & handled French style knives. I know they're completely different, but they just remind me of the cheap knives that we'd win at carnivals when I was a kid.

I'll go first:

A lot of ZT, some designs I actually do jive with, but I don't like the near Spydiechef folding-kitchen-knife Sheepsfoot vibe that they give off on a lot of knives, and the 0350, 0308, 0370, all of that... while I have some cause for concern, even if you torture tested one for me, I'd just think the look was BORING. While I am on this point...

Actually, something about this "classic-modern/semi-tactical" pocket-knife look, of a plain blade with thumb-studs... I think it is because I associate it with cheap gas-station knives subconsciously, the same way some may with Cold Steel, as I know they were big starters of this rejuvinator of the knife industry (OHO/"tactical"/half serrated - I know CS didn't do that first though), but before the rest, and in a unique way that is charming to me. If I was doing a lot of rough work, I'd buy a lot more 4-Max, Lawman, whatever they have in good S35 or AUS-10a.

Let me look up Benchmade while I am at it, prime example... Yeah, your Presidios, Barrage, Bailout, Bugout, Casbah, 917... they all look the same, to me! (Keep in mind this is free-opinion, no-good-reason complaint thread, please tell me if/why you think I'm wrong, but... it's just aesthetic talk) all of that is just awfully boring to me. Kind of the same way some see Spyderco (but I love Spyderco, technically favorite brand in numbers of knives by far). The Benchmade fixed blades (3V Puukko being my only one, I like it very much so far), Cruwear Adamas, and sometime, the 940 large appeal to me. I would take a Bugout in S90 or M4 for cheap if I had spare knife money, maybe. Just to try. A few personal issues with Benchmade, too.

To riff off of that, generic, bad-steel, released-by-dozen flippers, specifically, from Kershaw, and to an extent Gerber and CRKT, in that order, referring to Chinese flipper-type knives. I do like some other Kershaw knives, USA-mades, just not most of the flippers. Would also not buy a new Emerson, though I love his wave. Well, Spyderco, Demko and WMC's version of it. No recurves unless it is a reverse-S, too. No Chinese Buck - do not like the "modern" style, the most modern Buck I like is a lightweight version of the 110/

To continue off of THAT... Strider, Medford, I plain dislike. I don't like the price, knives, or the D2 that was on some for a long time, I understand. These are just gross people, as well, in their own unique ways. However, knives. I can hardly stomach a copper PM2 (are those guys with all-copper everything on Instagram... not really carrying that? HA) but good thing I don't mind patina. I originally had a less extreme but similar mild dislike for CRK and Hinderer, but those are actually very nice, and I like the clean hollow grinds instead of the shovel-point. I believe the Shaman in M4 is the closest to a Strider I will own, I call it my Striderco.

Case. I really was primed to love Case, but they are just messed up with the wiggle and the wonky grinds of the new knives, I just can't compare to a Rough Ryder, and I'd rather carry the RR and a SAK if I'm going somewhere this is required, the RR has beautiful FnF time and again for a third of the cost or less. My tiny Case Toothpick was 60 and messed up, my Cotton Sampler was less than 20 and not a gap to be seen, nor a problem, even with the weird shape of the cotton sampler blade.

What about you?

(Notice I mention disliking, say, specifically Chinese-made Kershaw flippers, and it's true, I don't like supporting China beyond a Rough Ryder, a lot of us don't, but to prevent thread closure, if you are going to mention things like Chinese, Pakistani knives or whatever, please no talk of their government!)

Sounds like you don't like much about knives in general:(

I don't care for G10, FRN, Grivory, and probably a few others. It just seems like another word for plastic. Don't really care for Micarta either, but not sure why. I do like titanium and CF.

Also, I want to like Chris Reeve knives, but I just can't bring myself to buy one. I know people that love them, so I got a little FOMO (fear of missing out). Maybe some day, so I'm not quite ready to say I dislike them.

Furthermore, I don't want any knife with mini or small in the name. I want knives with XL or large in the name. I'm oversized and want oversized stuff.

I dislike plastic scales, i.e. FRN, Grivory, ect. ect. Just seem to make them look and feel cheap to me.
I do like micarta but it seems pretty trendy and prefer G10 and plain Ti for a work knife.
Anything out of China…. Yep for Humanitarian, environmental, and political reasons!
Chinese Flytanium scales on USA blades
Traditionals... not the knives in general but the operation. Thanks to 40yrs in the electrical construction trade
Arthritis in my fingers makes nail nicks a struggle.
Gaudy heavily jeweled knives

Just remembered another pet peeve: forward finger choils that eat up 1/2" - 3/4" of the blade. In particular, I don't like the ones that are partially cut out of the blade's primary grind, so your index finger is pressed into a part of the blade that's quite thin, and it's right up against the sharpened heel of the blade.

In contrast, Spyderco does it right, because their choils maintain the full thickness of the blade, are jimped, and have a nub to prevent slipping up onto the edge.

pretty funny I would say Spyderco knives have always looked like absolute goofy dogshit but after 20years of collecting knives I bought my first Spyderco last week! Lol ... What got me was blade steel options, and if it gets lost you're only out two hundred bucks. My opinion, they're perfect utility knives but have a godforsaken fanboy club around them, like Glock.

Definitely not the most attractive, but most of their designs are very well thought out and extremely functional.
