I worked a bunch of OT over the last few weeks and I got the wifes blessing to order a new knife and can't make up my mind. I want to keep the cost down to around $100 give or take. My choices are the new Sage, Delica FG/G10, UKPK FG/G10, or a Caly3.
I really want something in FG/G10 and so far the UKPK and the Delica are topping my list.
While I like the Sage, I'm not a big fan of Liner Locks, and I'm not sure if I can get past it being made in Tiawan...but still... it is a fine looking knife!
I had a Caly3, which got traded, I do really miss the knife but I don't regret the trade, as I got a knife that I really, really wanted. Anyways the knife has great ergos, low ride wire clip, and I really like VG-10 steel. The only thing that I didn't care for is the pinned construction.
The UKPK has the same great ergo's as the Caly3:thumbup:, FG/G10:thumbup:, screw construction:thumbup:. This would just be a weekend carry, light duty knife, so a slippie should be fine, but still a lock would be nice. The only other difference is the blade steel...I prefer VG-10 to S30V for ease of sharpening, but this wouldn't be a deciding factor on choosing this knife. Not much not to like about this one.
Last but not least is the Delica screw construction:thumbup:, FG/G10:thumbup:, VG-10:thumbup:, FFG:thumbup:, no choil:grumpy:. this knife has everything I want, except a choil :grumpy: ...did I mention I really like a choil! I haven't owned a Delica in some time and can't remember how it fits in the hand .
Anyways I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on my choices and getting some input so I can pull the trigger and get my order in today.

Thanks
Davereb

Take a good look at the sage - especially if you like a choil. I was amazed at how well built it was. It reminds me of my Caly JR. but has s30v. It locks up solid an it has a great feel in the hand. Be aware that it is a liner lock and that the next variation is rumored to be a Reeve style Integral lock... don't know which you might prefer.

I would suggest the UKPK. It has the FG G-10 you want and the choil you want. The notch-joint gives a lot more resistence to closing than a conventional slip-joint, and it has a half-stop as well for increased safety. It has screw construction if you are one of those people who has to take things apart, and the linerless construction saves a little weight. Personally, I prefer S30V to VG-10, but I do cut a lot of rather abrasive materials, YMMV.

Sounds like you're looking for the G10 D4. It's got everything you want except for the choil, which I think you could do without. I was actually waiting for the G10 D4 to be released but couldn't wait any longer and got the Caly 3 instead

Could hang tight for a new full flat ground, G10 Police...

Except that it is even longer than the Manix.

The Sage really is a nice knife. The maker may be in Taiwan, but they really know their stuff, and the blade is American CPM S30V. The attention to detail is amazing, the carbon fiber is textured enough to provide good grip without being abrasive.

I'd go for the UKPK. Been considering getting one for a long time, but I just ordered a new scope for my rifle and need to hold off on extra purchases for a while... Maybe the Urban will come out by that time, really interested in getting hold of one of those.

I second this review. Although, I would have gladly spent more money for the Sage if it would of said, Golden, Colorado instead of Taiwan.

Of the ones you mentioned,I'd get the Caly3.

Me personally?I'm gettin' me a Volpe;)

DaveReb - I vote for the UKPK, it has the choil you like, is very similar to the Caly3 that you liked, but can be taken apart. It has the S30V that you don't love but, if it's a light use folder you won't have to sharpen it that often anyway:D If, upon more reflection, the S30V is a deal breaker I say try the the FFG D4. If you don't like it, it will be really easy to sell for close to what you paid. Have fun with whatever knife you get.

I'd say the Delica G-10. It's a very nice knife and constantly in my EDC rotation. I'm very happy with it and it holds an edge very well with little maintenence.

For the record though, I don't have a Caly3 and I've only handled a UKPK.

If the size isn't a problem you might try a FG Para-Millie. Otherwise, I'd go for the FG UKPK. I've had and used Delicas for years, but I really like the ergos of the Caly 3 / UKPK better.

Of course, I love my new Sage. It even takes pocket time away from my small Sebbie (something that no other knife has managed).

I really like the Sage. The G10 Delica is nice, but it seems a bit dainty to me somehow. I'm sure it's plenty tough, and I carried one for a while, but the Sage won the spot in my pocket. It's darn near perfect for my needs- looks classy, is the perfect size, has great ergos, isn't threatening looking, and feels quite solid.

The Caly 3 is too small for my hands, I tried one out at Blade last year and decided against it, even though I've heard nothing but glowing praise for it here.

Well I had every intent to buy a Spyderco, actually 3, and for a few days all I thought about was which 3 Spydies to get. Finally yesterday in the late afternoon I had my shopping cart loaded with the Para in FG/D2, the UKPK in FG, and I was deciding between the Delica FG/G10 or the Sage when it happened. Somehow I stumbled on the Sebenza page and ordered a small regular Sebe instead:o. Talk about an impulse buy, I never gave getting another Sebe a thought. To make things worse I made a trade arrangement earlier in the week to trade my S30V Para-Military plus another knife for a Strider PT:mad: I almost want to back out of the trade(it won't take place for another week), but I'll feel like a Sh1tHe@d, since I instigated the trade. Anyways the bright spot is that I'll be back too work next week, the layoff is over, so I'll have some Spydie cash freeing up in the not to distant future.
