Well got a BK2 coming this week but already want bigger:) so am wondering if Beckerhead's can help me out here. I really am stuck between these 3 but am more leaning towards the BK5. I'm looking for the best one out of the 3 that chop down tree's with ease, be a descent slicer, able to baton well, food prepper, pryer, which is why I'm almost thinking BK5 cause will be the best for all these since a little slimmer and blade shape is for slicing. Would really like to here from you that have/had all 3 which would be best.

Id go with the 5 or 7. The 5 is perfect for slicing and chops fairly well. It will baton but will definitely chew up your club. However the seven wouldn't do that but won't slice as well.

The bk7 was my first Becker. Just because it was more city friendly. But I still yearning for a bk9. Its a mother of a chopper. So a city 7 or a chopping 9.

Is the 9 a descent slicer? Could i slice a tomato with it in thin slices? Cause i'm almost thinking i could with the 5. Might use this for proceesing deer too so looking in between tree chopper/wood batoner and be able to to some delicate stuff like skinning game or food prep the tip and shape of blade on the 5 looks like it could do some slicing well. Thinner maybe. The 9 looks fat all the way down the blade can't believe could slice well but you guys would know better than me. The 9 is 1/4" thick and the 5 1/3" thick right?

You also said you want to baton with, the 5 can, but not as effectively as the 9. Chopping trees is more in line with a 9, and the 9 will be significantly better at prying.

It comes down to what you will be doing more of. Kitchen and camp prep, go for the 5, heavier camp duties and clearing some trees, brush and more chopping/prying go for the 9. They can both work, but different ends of the same spectrum.

Since no-one said it I WILL...... YOU CAN`T NOT HAVE A 9!!!!!!!!!! LOL...
Bujt any of your choises will eventually bring you to buy the others, so I don`t think it will matter that much;)

The 9 is definitely not 1/4" thick.

The 2 is the only 1/4" Becker currently in production I believe.

The 9 is .188" thick. The 5 is the same .188" thick. Double check the database on thicknesses, the 5 MAY be a bit thinner.

Yes the 9 will do everything you want and then some. What you really need to do is get a 9/11 combo though for processing deer.

The 9 will definitely slice, no problem. Make sure it's good and sharp, leave a slightly toothy edge, rest it on the tomato and pull. It might not make tomatoes that only have one side. But it will slice no problem.

No. The BK9 is 3/16, and the BK5 is 3/16, but it tapers much more than the 9, obviously. If you're doing LOTS of slicing, with some chopping, light Batonnig, go with the 5.

I've had three 5's, they just don't stick with me. You can't go wrong with either. If you really wan't the 5, get it. You should be able to trade it for a 9 if you want to go that way.

Good Luck!

my 7 just did this while making lunch. & so could the 9 with a bit of work. But a chopper is works better if you dont grind it down & polish it. Get a 9 & then a 5 or 15.

Ya guess i'm fooling myself trying to get one that can do it all. Got a BK24 already and 2 coming. Was hoping maybe 5 might do it all. It looks great like a big slicey blade that can slice delicately and chop with power without breaking. Kinda just hoping for a vote thing here too or if people had bad experiance with either doing the things said. Heard some people say they don't like the 5 can't remember why though. Kinda ruling out the 7 cause have 7 in. blades and want to go bigger so 5 and 9 torn between.

What about a 9 / 15 combo?

The 9 would handle all the large chores and the 15 is the same blade shape and profile of the 5 just tweener sized. Another something to consider.....

Truth is you just need them all ;)

Gotta ask. What did you not like about the 5's that you didn't keep them and perfer the 9 over the 5?

The 5 is one of my most used Beckers. You can't not have a 9 though. Love that beast too. You do speak like you'd get them eventually, so my obvious picks would be the 5 AND the 9. Skip the 7 and get a 15 and 16. What you're asking for is what a lot of people ask me too as an investment advisor. They want something that offers safety (money back), that doesn't cost a thing, and something that has a lot of return. Well, there's no such thing but some investment funds allow some sort of compromise.

That's what both the 5 and 9 do. They do a lot of stuff really good, but here and there they compromise. You gotta make out for yourselves which variables you find the most important, and let that guide you. Want a chopper/batonner that can slice and make some food? Get a 9. Want a slicer/food prepper/finer task knife that can chop and baton? Get a 5. Want it all? Get both.

Your right probably looking for chopper style first cause there ain't no way i won't have a folder on me too so could just use that for slicer/skinner.As much as i'd like to own them all i'm gonna really try to have only 3.:o I'm a broke SOB and don't see that changing anytime soon so 3 is it for a long time. Don't own a vehicle,or a home or anything worth a crap but have a descent collection of knives and guns. BK24 for a small, BK2 for fat medium, and 9 or 5 for the large. It's a hard call think i'm gonna watch some more youtube vids and take a better look at em and see how well they do some deeds. Gonna probably wait until the BK2 comes also to see how it is and make a choice from there.

After reading this I will suggest the 5. Call me blasphemer but, with already owning a 2, you will be able to comfortably split / baton through 3-4 inch longs. Pair your 3 with a folding saw and you will be able to do everything described above.

Then after you save for a little more... get a 9 because you can't not have a 9
