Which one BK5 , 9, or 7?

Chopping trees? Batoning? Cutting stuff? - BK9
Slicing veggies, ribs, brisket, other foods? cutting stuff? - BK5
Prying stuff? A 9 can handle some prying but the BK3 IS a sharpened pry bar. It cuts, it batons, it pries, it digs, it wedges. It will NOT slice tomatoes into thin, see through curtains.

But sometimes a big blade just gets in the way, so a 15, 16 or 17 for those "delicate" tasks....

So I'd vote to get -
a 9 to chop and baton and cutting
a 5 for slicing and camp duty and cutting
a 3 to handle everything the other 2 don't and for versatility

And then a 16 for smaller, nimbler cutting.

The 5 is by far the best slicer.
Prying?...Not so much. Use your 2 for that. :D
I have much love for the BK5.

I'm also partial to the BK9. :D
I'd hate to have to pick between the two.
The BK7 is the only Becker that I'm just not too crazy about.

I really ground my 7. I would say near 1mm on each side. Almost removing all history of any grind marks. That's because I never planned on cutting anything harder than flesh. This is why I still want an unground bk9 for chopping. Just had 2 good name for my seven pop into my head. If I ever etch it.

Gotta ask. What did you not like about the 5's that you didn't keep them and perfer the 9 over the 5?

It's not really that I don't like the 5, rather, the BK9 is just so much better, IMO. The 9 chops sooo good, and it is the best batoner. If you're going to be doing any chopping/batoning, you're gonna have to keep good care not to get wood chips on that tomato. :D

You said "chop down trees with ease," and "baton well," and "pry" I wouldn't do any of those tasks with the 5 frequently, save tree chopping, but only on soft wood, like poplar.

Hope this helps!

Man that 5 setup you got there is beyond sweet. Thanks for showing both. That 5 is looking so big and slicey though but the 9 is such a chopping power beast! I think i am developing schizophrenia over this descision. All last night couldn't sleep cause kept hearing voices saying" You can't not have a 9":) . My rebuttle was "leave me be specter i'm leaning towards the 5 but their both so good it's tearing my conscious apart!" This is gonna take awhile to make a choice. I really should get one just so i can sleep at night. If don't like the one choosen sell it and get the other. I'm probably just fooling myself not getting both. I'm sure i will within the next year. Might by the 9 new and 5 used since i see 5's pop up on the exchange once and awhile and never see the 9 show up. I got the 2 i'm getting on the exchange used still hasn't been shipped yet bought on saturday and he had stuff going on so won't get til this Sat or next week. So still waiting to make my a choice based on how it is. This Beckerhead think isn't some kind of cult is it?:) I feel a divine power persuading me to get more and more and i can't stop.:) Why do they have to be so good? I can't wait to get the 2 with a bigger handle than the 24. I predict comfortable grippy goodness.

The 9 never appearing on the exchange should be a good sign to what knife you need to buy, or what..... Lol

Get the BK-9. Get a BK-5 down the road when you can afford it better to have more options. You got the slicing and food prep option covered with the BK-24 and your folder. The only use that I personally think the BK-5 is much better with is meat processing. I don't own a BK-9, but I do have a BK-7. I use a Condor Pack Golok for most of my chopping needs. Eventually I will get a BK-9, tis the way of things with me, just because.

Frankly, I have way too many knives already for "use" to justify them. But it really is all about fun.

Yep. That's exactly what i was thinking too. Probably gonna get the 9 new and 5 used later down the line or a week from now.;) this is maddening to say the least.:) I wish the 2 i have coming could be teleported over today. Zytel is a plastic and not a rubbery texture right? Just looked it up and i always thought it was rubber but was saying it was plastic.

No it's a plastic-type, if you do not feel it is grippy enough, you can use hockey tape, bicycle inner tubing or take a soldering iron and stiple a pattern of your choice on them....
Eventually you might make scales or order some micarta scales, that is the genious of Beckers, there are only limits to your own imagination...

Yeah micarta would be great, love the way that 5 looks up above with it. Was confusing Kytel to Kraton when thinking rubber. What might also do is try to mold melt a Hogue rubber pistol grip one to it somehow or two together or maybe skateboard tape for rough grip. Both shown on this Glock. Will probably try the hogue grip on the 2 when it comes or start looking for other grippy textured stuff to try. First gotta see how the zytel will feel bare.

Just checked out that whole thread there is alot of good mods there. The 2 got shipped tonight should be here on Fri or Sat. Gonna melt some kind of rubbery substance in/on the scales and detail it somehow.

Once I stipled my scales and sanded them down, they actually took on a significantly more "rubbery" feel to them, definitely less plastic like.

I'm not in the market for a Becker right yet but you all have convinced me that when I pull that trigger (gotta love Ethan!) it will be a 9, no questions asked.

I personally like the hard plastic handles on the Beckers. They fit nicely in the hand and you can use them holding the knife with edge down as in cutting or edge up as in a stabbing position. There is a certain genius in the design.

Lots of things can be used to make them more grippy if that is what you want. I would go the bicyle handle bar tape route myself.

I'd say the 9. I have a BK2 and a BK9, between the two I have all my bases covered. Why go with a BK7 when you can have a BK9 and two more inches of blade?
