i guess this is an odd request, but which model would be the least noticable clipped inside my front jeans pocket. i work in manhattan and pass through grand central station everyday. in grand central, i pass lots of cops and military guys. any help would be appreciated. this would also be my first spyderco purchase.

cheers

I'll say a Byrd Crossbill (it's made by spyderco) and if your worried about people noticing it. just drop it in your pocket.

Tony, don't clip it on you in NYC. If you don't want to draw unwanted attention to yourself, put it in your pocket!

You need to go over to the forum on spyderco.com and read all the stories of guys in NYC having their knives confiscated and even being arrested for having them. Put your knife down in your pocket until you get where you're going in NYC.

Some other time we can debate the logic the NYPD is using to determine who to hassle about knives. Hey, there's a guy who has a knife! It is obviously clipped in plain sight so he isn't trying to hide it, but let's arrest him anyway. Who cares if 10 muggers or rapists with "real" concealed weapons walk past while we are boosting our arrest rate by busting the honest guy?

Ooops, sorry. Living in the South, I just can't understand some of the shenanigans that law enforcement gets up to in the North.

The law in NYC says a knife MUST be concealed, and current practice is to define even the clip showing as failure to conceal. Drop it in a pocket and don't let it print even there. Even if the knife itself is legal (UNDER 4" blade) you cannot let any part of it show.

after speaking with my brother inlaw (nypd sgt), he suggested what lots of you suggested. keep it in my pocket, not showing. so i picked up a delica 4. not too big, not too expensive. pretty sweet. im already thinking of picking up another one with a serrated edge.
thanks guys

Yeah, laws are strangely opposed city to city. Here in San Francisco, it's the opposite- you MUST have at least the clip showing. Go figure.

Based on what I've read about NY, if I lived there I would not even use pocket clips. I'd start carrying again in my pocket deep like I did growing up.

Reach up at the wrong time and let a cop notice you have a knife on you and the next thing you know you are in front of a judge being fined and given a record for carrying a dangerous weapon.

When I don't anyone to know I'm carrying a knife, I carry a clipless Cricket.. it's so flat it's near invisible.

This is a great idea. I love my SS Cricket. Without the clip, you could drop it into the "coin" pocket of jeans. This way, you'd have easy access and no one would know it was there. Coupled with the great utility that model offers, you have a winner on your hands.

Otherwise, please do as others have suggested and keep the knife deep in your pocket. I'd hate to see another "NYC knife confiscation(theft)" thread. Keep the clip on, and just clip it to your pocket when you get home. Stay safe!

the meerkat rides a touch lower than the caly 3. But im with everyone else in saying just stick it in your pocket clipless.

I'm not in the city too often anymore (I go to school elsewhere) but whenever I am I have the Caly3 clipped. I've been considering carrying my UKPK instead but I am not as fond of slipjoints as the lockback.

Do be aware that, as far as the NYC law concerning visible display is concerned, a non-locking folder clipped in your pocket would still violate it. Granted, you'd probably only lose the knife and get fined rather than risk having the charges escalate to a misdemeanor "gravity knife" charge that could land you in jail, although there's still a slight chance the cop might decide it's a "dangerous knife", but even just the confiscation and fine would be an inconvenience.

Lava in the coin pocket, optional short lanyard to help get it out. Lanyard may show, rest doesnt. Not sure if that satisfies NYC laws.
