My friend Kyle drew up a picture of the knife he wants to make and said he is going to order the materials and he showed it to me and he's all excited. He wants to order steel bar tool steel and mycarda and make a knife. He left the drawing at my place on the kitchen table and I looked at it a lot and I thought to myself THIS IS NOT A GOOD DESIGN!!!! I CAN DO BETTER!!! Plus also I can use just found items to make it with. repurpossing is what its called. I want to repurpose things.

OK so I took HIS drawing and right below it, I made a nother dRAWING of my own and I am going to give it back to Kyle with both of the drawings on it he will not be convinced by just me telling him I want him to see all yalls commints to be convinced I have the best design.

Which one is the best one to take on a deer hunt

To be honest, 0.25" blade stock would be a hindrance for a hunting/skinning knife.
For skinning you want a thin blade, roughly 3 to 4.5 inches, with a little bit of flex.

If you really want to make the best do it yourself skinning knife, get an Old Hickory 7" butcher knife, cut the blade down to 3 to 4 inches, and reshape to either a drop point or spear point.
If you want to change the handle scales, use Chicago Screws or Cutler's Rivets. They are easy to use, work great, and are cheap. They also come in steel, brass, and copper.

A Mora #1 or #2 would be hard to beat for hunting/skinning, should you decide to just get a store bought kinfe.

Making a knife from an old Dodge (or any other brand) leaf spring is a LOT more involved and costly than you may think, if you do it right. And, if it's not done right, why bother?

Sonoran Belt Knife/Caper on top, Sonoran Hunter next and Sonoran Skinner on bottom. Designed with the help of a world travelling hunter/writer and torture tested at a game ranch where numerous animals were processed daily from first of Oct through the end of Mar. At the end of Mar they asked if they could keep the test set and sent me their own money (not the outfits but personal money), for more. If you're looking for an all rounder look hard at the hunter design. A2 at 62 RC. Do not use 1/4 stock for this project. These are ground so thin they are sharp before I grind the secondary bevel.

@ Horsewright : These are easily in the top nicest EDCs I have seen in recent times.
