I voted for the Bushcrafter,

...but I'd be happy with any of those knives on a camping trip. ;)

I placed my vote, but what I think really needs to happen is for you to take 6 more camping trips featuring each knife individually, then when all is said and done you share your thoughts on which out of the 7 blades (Nessie already had a 'feature') in your opinion is the best all-arounder for you!

I'll be doing another long weekend camping trip in the next few weeks. This time I'll be heading out for the Hill People Gear Summer Gathering and celebrating my birthday with my family and the Hill Brothers and a bunch of other folk. I can't imagine a better way to spend my birthday.

I'm wondering which knife I should test out next so I can save you from more Camp Nessie pics. I'm having a hard time deciding so I thought what they hey, why not do a poll and let you help me pick. Originally I was just thinking about the 4.5" + blades, but decided to open it up to the Bushfinger and Bushcrafter as well.

So from the following 6, which one should I use?

Woodsman, Camp Nessie (not included in poll), Hunter, Bear Paw, Woodchuck

Bushfinger, Bushcrafter

So far, what I've learned from this is that I'm going to have to take more trips so I can test them all or at least test the one I voted for 'cuz it's definitely not going to win.

Regarding the questions about why take just one: I'm looking for good all-around performers that I can rely on to do anything. In the past, I've taken a ton of knives (and did on this trip too, just didn't use them) and was constantly switching between them as I had them in niche roles. This one's the wood carver, that one's the kitchen knife, that other one's the chopper, etc. When car camping, it's easy to take a ton and who cares about the weight. I'm planning on doing more backcountry backpacking this year so I plan on taking one all-around camp knife and then a backup knife. Something like the Camp Nessie and the Hiking Buddy.

My quest exactly Thuringia, only more eloquently stated. Plus add in a little at home kitchen duty and that's the perfect one for me. Looking forward to the series! Ha!

I'd say if you were to carry a smaller knife with a nice drop point on it, a woodsman would cover just about everything else. But I also see a merit to many recommending the hunter.

I use a Camp and thin Ladyfinger for a combo and a Hunter when just bringing one.

Well...had you said "field" knife rather than "camp" knife, my answer may have gone differently. As the question is posed...I'm sure you know what my answer was :D

Looks like we're down to a two horse race. Which is it going to be? Long and pointy Woodsman or tall with some belly (like me) Hunter?

If you don't plan on bringing a SAK Farmer etc. then I'd go for the (rather sexy) Hunter

Oh Oh, Woodsman is catching up. You guys pushing for the Hunter better round up some more votes.

SAK Farmer will be going along for the same reason as using it on the last trip. Need something for a firesteel scraper although the spine on the Hunter is pretty sharp in some spots.

Thurin, I think you should start another pole with only Hunter and Woodsman. Then all of us that voted for a knife no longer in the running can vote for one of the two finalists!

Yea Nathan, since I already voted, I cannot vote again. I wasted mine on the Woodchuck. I love that blade.

The little bit of extra length of the Woodsman might come in handy over the Hunter, but if you have to do some game processing, the belly of the Hunter will go to good use.

The woodchuck was my vote as we'll.

I'd hate to clog things up with yet another post created by me. If anyone that voted for something other than the Hunter or Woodsman wants to change their vote, they can either post it here publicly or send it to me in a PM if you want to keep it private and I'll add up the votes.

Honor system applies. If you use this opportunity to double vote, then the next Fiddleback Friday knife you try to grab will be sharked 1.2 seconds before you get it.
