Hey guys. What’s the smallest Opinel here that you can still grip comfortably with your entire hand? I’ve yet to add one to the collection.

I used many Opinel sizes, my preference are No 6, to 9, with the 8 and 9 the the best for me.

The No 8 has 2mm blade stock while the No 9 has 2.2mm blade stock. Thicker than the smaller ones, but the blade is wider, therefore grind angle stays are bout the same. I feel like they can do more activities.

I would've keep a No 6, if it's not for the fact that the 91mm SAK main blade is about the same size (shorter cutting edge, I know) and is as good despite being thicker than the No 6.

I have both 8 & 9 ...
Out of the two , the 9 is best in my medium+ sized hands ..
The 8 is just a little small and round , but the No9 hits the sweet spot !

Opinel No8 is probably the Number 1 seller out of the Opinel series ..

I have the #8, #10 Billhook, and #15 Slim. I'd love to get a big bad #13 at some point, but it's not because it would be the most practical thing to own.

The #15 Slim is the one I use the most. It's handy for slicing large fruit. The #12 Slim would also be a handy slicer to have on hand.

I'm a Buck 110 guy. So, the "9" and "10" are the models that are around me the most, with the "8" being a very close runner-up.

I voted for the "9". 🤷‍♂️

On the rare occasion that I go to a steak house.. I like to take/use my No.8.. Hate those steak knives that most restaurants use.. I was using it one time and the manager stopped at our table.. He noticed my No.8 and commentated.. I showed it to him and he liked it..
JMO!!!

I had to chuckle at your post.

I'm not a big $$$ guy. So, it's not too often that I find myself at a really nice steakhouse. However, almost every time I've been, I've noticed someone using their own blade. I've heard guys talking about doing it, many times. But, being a "knife" guy, I've always thought it was really cool to actually witness. 👍

I have a #8 and a couple of #9's. My favorite and most used is the 9. For slicing apples it's the cat's whiskers.

An 08 is plenty of grip. A 06 rests at the edge of the inside of my palm like most 3 1/2 inch traditional slip joints do. I’ve yet to try a 07, but at 4 inches I expect it to be a four finger grip.

The one thing I’ll say is a generally nice modification for the No. 8 (and possibly 7) is to whittle down and round off the back corner of the fishtail. On smaller models like the no. 06 I’m starting to leave it on because it provides a little more handle.

D DangerZone98 First, my modified no 8, then my in modified 06. You can see the handles are both wide enough for my hand, but the way I hold them puts the corner of the fishtail into my palm. Not a bad thing for the 06, necessarily, as it makes the handle diagonally longer, but the 08 has plenty of handle, so I take the corner off.

Thanks for the suggestion! 08 or 09 it is for me then if I grab an Opinel.

My RFP for a few years. I don’t carry the Okapi much lateiy. I took off enough of the tail of the Opinel that I had to file down the trailing point. If you want to leave the blade alone, you have to leave enough handle to cover the point.
If you flatten the sides a little, the knife will ride better in your pocket. Antonini and MAM do that bit of work for you.
