so i am looking at getting an opinel and i am pretty set on the no6 but i would go to the 7 or 8 if i needed to. the question i want to ask is if anybody knows about any variations of the opinel costing less than $30 because i dont want the boring normal opinel that everyone has, i want something unique.

Take a look at the olive wood handle versions. Available in #6 and #8 standard sizes and several slim version sizes. IMO more attractive than the standard wood due to contrasting grain patterns.

Look for the Garden Knife and the Efile. Both have a different handle from the standard Opinels. The Garden has a drop point blade and the Efile has a filet blade.

The Inox blades are available in a whole mess of different premium woods such as ebony, burl, olive, oak and such. Mostly 8s and few 6s. The 6 is like a tiny peanut. The 8 is a really wonderful size and rightly the most popular.

Try a Slim No. 8 Bubinga.

That Slim is what I called Efile / filet. AG has / had it in a nice leather sheath.

Nice. My own is the Slim No. 8 Ebony Handle. Great for paring fruits and cutting steak.

Should i get slim or original

If your primary concern is looks...get whatever you think looks cool. We can't tell you what looks cool to you. Slim looks cool to you? Get that and enjoy the heck out of it.

Or just get the boring #8 that everybody else has. (They got it because it is a phenomenal knife that works. Unurpassed slicer.)

I'm eyeing a #12 myself. Never had an Opinel before, and since I like 4+ knives, the 4.75 blade talks to me.

:) I was just looking at thing on the Opinel site a couple minutes ago too. Its an Opinel on steroids. It's the A-Rod of Opinels. I like it!

Get one of those suckers, spray paint it camo, and wrap the handle in gaffers tape. Boom! One of a kind. :D

For what it's worth, I carry a #9 Carbone every single day. It's the knife that lives in my pocket.

Like Marcinek said, they just work; and I don't know anything that works better once you pop that locking ring off and snug up the pivot, In my opinion that makes he knife a lot stronger.

One of the reasons I love the standard Opinels is that the blade is long enough to reach into jars and has enough belly to spread stuff. It's just not true that any knife can spread peanut butter.

Of course, this is just part of it. They're also insanely tough and work wood well too.

I prefer mine trimmed back to a drop point (1 beer and a diamond stone) but I would be leery of the fillet versions unless I specifically was getting it for cleaning fish or small game. Depends on your use.

A light strong work knife that can be used with food. Speaking of which, I have a banana and some almond butter...

Pinnah, youre a man after my own heart. This is the primary reason that the Opinel is my EDC, I need a workhorse that can make a sammich daggnabitt!!

I love the tools on my SAK but te blade just doesn't cut it when it comes tithe mayonnaise jar..

dang, now you guys are making me want a slim version...

I wouldn't exactly call the 6 a tiny peanut... the blade is just a hair under three inches, which seems to be the median length on carry blades. it's a nice size, and legal just about anywhere besides a few fascist hold outs. and the contours of the handle makes it very comfy in hand, if a bit thick in pocket.

the 8 is a great size, but don't discount the 6.
