which opinel

Opis are what got me into knives - I mean, I always carried something like a SAK or a K.I.S.S. as a money clip, but they didn't do it for me after a while, and I wanted something a lil more grown-up. Moras were interesting, but I can't exactly EDC one, and when you read about Moras, inevitably someone mentions Opinel. Started with the 8, but it was a little "intimidating" for the office, so I went to 6, then a 7. The 7 is a perfect compromise for me. (then I added a Douk-Douk, but that's another story). I can't believe how perfect these little guys are for what they do. They're the noumena of pocketknives.

Opis are a gateway drug, for sure, though. I've added a Nontron to my collection, and I've caught myself eyeing up Laguioles. The French did for folding knives what the Great Pyramid at Cheops did for rocks.

Using an opi is an education, too - when I got my Nontron, sure, it's a beautiful knife, but for 10X the price of an opi, you don't get much more. But that's because there's not much more you can get from a knife.

Other easy opinel mods for that unique look. Pencil and a sharp knife, maybe some sandpaper. some people use a needle file, but I dont think the grooves are as crisp. Takes about 1/2 hour maximum.

Wow, you did that in 1/2 an hour?

Don't forget about the Limited Edition (500 units worldwide) Opinel No. 8 Vinland Damascus Blade & Ebony handle!

Actually, I made that.

I'd like to see someone try in half an hour!

I made a very short WIP with some instructions for this type of carving here:

It's the second post ;)

I hope you can access this page, if not I'll upload the pictures here.

My sincerest apologies to Frederiek and Navaja. All I can say is I must have been drunk when I posted.
I'd just been made redundant at that time and all my stuff was on my work laptop. I actually meant to post carving these two took an evening.

I think I intended then to say a bit more work sanding, cleaning up the blade lacquer/varnish can get them to the fine examples I posted, but who knows what goes through your mind when you're on a bit of a bender.
My apologies again, Frederiek.

Look on Pinterest, and in Etsy. People have done some cool things. Opinel sells knives with handles that have extra wood, so you can carve them, and the company sells some very fancy and expensive stock models in laminated woods or ebony.
