I've been looking lately at getting a little smaller knife like a cadet. I'm not able to work at the moment so just need a small knife to open a small paxkage, cut a loose string from a shirt . I also will carry something like a buck spitfire or a native 5 in case I need a bigger more heavy duty blade. With money being tight right now just looking for some reccomendations on what everyone carries that can be had for a few bucks

Recruit
Huntsman
For a keychain knife either a Classic or Signature. (Signature is the same as a Classic, but it has a pen in place of the toothpick.)

The Huntsman and Classic/Signature have scissors to take care of wayward threads.

I carry a Hiker quite a bit. It’s got a nice tool set up. I also carry a Farmer, but my OCD pings when it’s open from the off set main blade. That being said, I do like the large size of the blade.

I have a couple Alox Cadets & have one in my left pocket all the time. They’re usually not my main carry knife, but they take up so little room in the pocket & they’re so useful that there’s really no reason not to carry one.

I prefer the Leatherman Micra as a pocket companion for a larger EDC knife. I prefer the more robust shears which easily cut through zip ties. I also like that it can be opened full length when using the knife blade or screw driver blades. Easier for me to handle with my XL sized hands. I also have found the Micra to be more durable than any of the Victorinox products I've owned.

I prefer the Rambler over the Classic since it has a Phillips screwdriver and bottle opener. The Tinker has a very handy set of tools if you want something larger, again with a Phillips screwdriver. I think the Huntsman is one of the most well-rounded designs since it includes scissors and a saw (but no Phillips screwdriver!). An Alox Cadet is nice and compact with the basic tools. So much depends on what size and what tools you need most.

Well, technically the can opener doubles as a Phillips, and you can get the corkscrew attachment - tiny Phillips. ;)

But yeah, not as useful as the one on the Fieldmaster, which is just a Huntsman with the corkscrew swapped out for a Phillips. :)

Go for a used silver alox. They can be had very cheap and show little wear. The Classic is the premier string cutter, but a Bantam is the bee's knees.
