Which small Busse(kin) for around my hot dog cart?

Before anyone throws out any pork jokes....there is none to be had on my cart...ALL BEEF!! Vienna Beef to be specific...and Sabrett.

Anyway, I need a small 3-4" blade to cut the Sabretts apart as they are linked. Plus I need something that I can stab through huge chunks of ice cubes to bust them up. Cutting open bags/seals/etc.

As I said, it'll be used for a variety of tasks.

I was thinking the Scrapmax but then Jerry said they are NOT beater knives that can take a lot of abuse. Then again, I think he was talking about metal to metal hammering.

Then there is the 311 which seems pretty stout.

I'd like to keep it under $150-ish.

Any suggestions for a small blade that can stand up to pretty much anything you throw at it?

Thanks

Not speaking from experience but I had similar questions in the past and was told rodent solution, RMD and Rodent 4

Absolutely, the scrap max would not be the one to stab ice. Those are some laser thin knives. 311 sounds more the right thickness. I love res c.

Almost anything else from the yard will do what you described. Swamprat too.

Some food for thought too, if you hunt, infi can be had in that size range often for about 50 more.

Oh ok.

I should add that I prefer a significant hilt or whatever the part of the handle that prevents your hand from sliding forward when thrusting/stabbing.

On another note...is that guy dead in your sig line? Is that a pet? Did you name it Jerry?

Nah its not dead. I did a internet search in google for a Sus Scorfa to see what the blade looked like. Then I clicked on the pictures tab. A bunch of pictures of this lil guy showed up amongst the other pictures. sus scorfa is a name for a wild boar.

I just picked up a HRLM is the forums this afternoon that I think would fit your bill. I paid a little more than your target price but then again mine came with a nice sheath. I have seen them go for around your target price range and a little less in the recent past.

I would try to find something in 154CM, like the Mud Puppy or Weiner Dog. Yea, thats it, if it was my Hot Dog cart, I would have to use a Weiner Dog! Or the Scrap Muk would be usefull for food prep. If you could find a later CG version and strip it, it may fit your price range.

Not sure I'd rely on the thinner 154CM knives (and definitely not the Elmax ones) for ice.

How's about an INFI War Dog? Beefy... ;) & pointy, with a nice hand filling Res-C handle. It'll slice dogs all day long and should have plenty of tip strength for those ice chunks. Prolly a li'l higher than $150 unless you found the right user... :)

You need an Anorexic Assault Shaker. Right, Jerry?

Garth?

Pokey?

Anybody?

Thanks for the suggestions. Shortness is definitely important. Today, I broke out my Rajah II, stabbed right through the ice and punctured two of my cans of soda. I was only out .50 and eventually drank them both anyway, but still...

After seeing a bunch I'm still not sure on a specific model. But the characteristics I'm looking for are. 1) Short blade 2) Thick/tough/reinforced blade/tip 3) Pronounced hilt to keep my hand from sliding forward and on to the blade.

War dog that thing is 1/4" thick, with a great handle, infi and rust resistant. All of the Sr101 blades seem to hold an edge a little longer, but rust at the sight of moisture.

Rodent solution? It's my new favorite user so it's expected I suggest it. As far as blades go, it's my Mrs. Jones.

And "we got a thang, goin' on!"

Get a wardog. It has a res-c handle, satin infi and 5" blade. (might be a bit more than $150 but exactly what you need)

I love my wardog. it's rides in my go bag and gets beat on in the woods quite regularly. it should work well for you

emt1581,

To stay under $150, I would recommend the SY 311 - a disadvantage would be the coating for food prep. You could strip the coating, but the SR-101 steel will rust without some care. I tried my SY 511 with both my hand and the grip wet, and I could hold it securely in a reverse grip (edge facing out), and with the shape of the pommel it is easy to put your thumb there (for breaking the ice).

If you can afford it, I would suggest a Basic 4 - it already has a satin finish and the INFI steel is very rust resistant. The Basic 4 came in two blade thicknesses, .155" and .220". I would think even the thinner one would hold up fine to the ice due to the height of the blade, and it would certainly be a better slicer. There are some on the BF for sale forum now for $257.

The Resiprene C grips are excellent.

Gene

ps, a Basic 3 would also be a great choice, but they are a hard to find these days.

Geez I didn't even consider that about the coating...EXCELLENT point and I'm glad you raised it.

Ok, so both the Rodent 4 and the 311 are out...

I guess I'll look for one of the Basics.

As for the knives the others have suggested, most seem to have a really tiny hilt that I'd be worried about sliding forward on.

Thanks

From what I have read in the forum here, it is pretty easy to remove the coating with a chemical stripper, so maybe the 311 could still be an option. I would definitely recommend the Res C grips for use with the ice.

But that is SR-101. I would worry about patina/rusting. I think now an INFI blade will be the best option. Competition finish would be fine to save on cost.
