How about a fun little poll? I have always been debating if I should add a Spyderco Military to my collection. However, if you could have your pick, which would you choose? The regular s30v blade with G-10, or the BG-42 with carbon fiber. Feel free to post your opinions about each configuration.

I like BG42 . Carbon Fiber scales are perfect for hard use. PH washer and steel nested liner are a big plus for this version. All in all, one of a perfect timeless user ever exists. :D

G10. grippier than CF, and this 'standard' mili is mor affordable than the CF. unless you're keen on collecting and collector's items in the near-future.......

G10. grippier than CF, ...
Dennis75, sorry I can't agree. If the Carbon Fiber on the Military would be shiny carbon then yes, but it isn't.
Spyderco used Peel Ply Carbon Fiber and IMO this is grippier.

I currently have a Spyderco Military in my back pocket. S30V blade and lightweight plastic scales...
The Military never had lightweight plastic scales; the pics you show present a Military with G-10 scales :)

WadeF: If I were you, I would take the BG-42 Military!

really? i had no idea, i thought it the same-as-usual CF......; cool then!

do you think the Peel Ply CF is sturdy/reliable? (chipping/breaking of scales?)

thanks

denn

Yes, I think so, it's sturdy and reliable and grippier :)

The pictures show a Military S30V with peel ply carbon and this is the same material used on the BG-42 version:

Uuups, I found another picture on my c-drive :o

You see both Military versions - S30V + BG-42 with carbon peel ply

What a coinicidence seeing this thread. I just purchased a BG42 Military last night off eBay. Got a good price on it. I couldn't resist the carbon fiber handles and this will be my first blade with BG-42 steel. Also ordered the vertical sheath from Vess on eBay as well. I will put this folder in my EDC rotation as soon as I get it.

BG42 Carbon Fiber Milie all the way! You will be surprized at how such a big knife weighs so little! Big thank you to Spyderco to put this fantastic knife out for us. Wj

I sure would like to have one of these for Christmas. It is hard to beleive the military could be made better! My all time favorite knife, besidee the Chinnok, manix, Pershian.:D

I have both, and the nod goes to the BG-42 version. The use of a ball-bearing steel appeals to me more than S30V. The lock is also theoretically stronger on the BG-42 version because of the 2nd nested liner, plus, as mentioned, you get PB washers instead of nylon. To me, it's the Holy Grail of EDC knives (until something else inevitably pops up later down the road). So much knife in such a slim, lightweight package. YMMV.

People are really going to be kicking themselves when the BG-42 sprint run pieces are all gone. Well, maybe not, if Spyderco chooses to use this steel in regular production pieces. Please? :)

I'm glad that I finally settled on getting a BG-42/carbon fiber scale Military before they disappear. I was debating on it for a little while. It was between the Military and the Police model that I was looking at (but the Police model doesn't come in carbon fiber scales and BG-42, right?)

I know some people prefer BG-42 to s30v. My only experience with BG-42 is with my large Sebenza. Have any of you done any comparision between Spyderco's s30v and BG-42?

Congratulation!!!

Personally I think the difference between BG-42 and S30V is not enough to get too worked up about. I happen to prefer S30V but not by a wide margin.

However, there is a big difference in the handle materials because the peel-ply CF is VERY rigid. G10 has some flex to it when gripped tightly but the CF does not, even when the pocket clip is removed.

Also, the CF retains its texture better than G10. The G10 starts out grippier but the CF feels great and will stay that way.

I've EDC'd a Military, G-10 ATS-34 since they came out, first was a black blade, lost it. then found a satin blade.

I like the aggressive choil on the older models, and mine says "Military"

I also have a 440V and a S30V in box just in case.

BG42 sounds cool, but why did almost all the makers/manufacturers move on to S30V?

Personally, I like Gin-1 and ATS34 quite a bit. VG10 and S30V were newer and superior in the eyes of many.

Wade, a BG-42 version is a winner - two reasons:
1. exclusive BG-42 heat treated by Spyderco to HRC 61, extremely fine grain.
2. with the second liner it certainly gains an advantage over the one-liner models.

It is a perfect f&f, quite in the class of your beloved M2 BM 710.

You all have got me wanting one, broke again. Always did like the miltary. Is it as light as the G-10 version?:)
