Which Spydie has best ergonomics?

Dan - Thanks for the birthday greetings! It's great! And my Military arrived today, exactly on my birthday! What a great gift!

JerryO - I wondered when someone would mention the Goddard! I've never had the privilege of holding one, but they look like they'd be quite comfortable to use! And quite safe, too, with that 'half guard' it has! It'd be nice if it came in a plain edge, or fully serrated, but I might just have to break down and get one some day anyway.

Actually, the Goddard Lightweight IS available in a full plain-edged version. A run of these was produced about 6 months ago. I have one. It's one of my favorite knives, and yes, the handle is comfy.

Hello,

IMHO the Wegner Junior and the Starmate.

I have been really surprised by the confort of the Starmate while cutting oak all an afternoon.

Cheers,

JM

What can beat the feel of the Calypso series?

Hmmm. I'm surprised so many people have said Military and Wegner, not many people have said the Native. Sure, the Military's great but I think if you're just judging ergonomic handle comfort, Native. Deep index finger choil allowing for a choke-up grip. Also a fairly thick handle (for its size) gives you solid grip. I also think the spider web pattern on the handle is very comfortable compared to the "volcano grip" on the Endura's and other Spydies. Wonder why it's not used on more Spydies?

RJ Talas:

I can't remember his e-mail right now but if you want a Goddard, Wayne himself has all the Spydie versions in stock including the limited run of plain edge Goddard Jr's(micarta).

klut - Thanks. Wayne and I have been in touch.

I have smallish hands, so my fav is the Wegner Jr, followed closely by the BF Native.

Note that I mentioned the BF Native...I handled both, stock version and the BF G-10 version and preferred the latter as being more grippable.

I agree with Clay's thoughts on the advantages of the choil of the Native giving a better grip (by moving the hand forward thus giving you more handle), but have wondered about the safety and wisdom of doing chores for any significant length of time with my finger next to the edge. A slip on that smooth choil puts your index finger right onto the blade ... not a pretty thought.

For any big chores with my Native, I'd probably try to forgo the choil (only because my hands are small enough to let me hold the handle entirely).

Realistically, I'd be more likely to heft my Wegner Jr for most things..it's just a lot of blade wrapped around by a small and comfortable (and solid) G-10 handle.

The Endura always feels good to me. The new 98 model may even be better.

Really like the Starmate too. Seems natural no matter how you hold it.

Don't own the Wenger but have handled them
(both jr. and full size), and have to agree with the other posts!

Still the Wegner. Man I love this knife. I find myself carrying it on duty more than any other. Great ergonomics. Great defensive tool.

Well,
I'm still in a quandry over which is better. And to make it even more confusing, since this thread started almost 4 months ago, I've added a G10 Police model and the Starmate to my collection AND the list of most ergonomic. They all fill my hand well in different ways and they all feel good after a lot of cutting.

It's a sweet confusion though!

The Calypso Jr.

The Copilot, which is an amazing example of beeing able to get an excellent hold on a very small knife.

If anybody still cares

the large Wegner.

first off, i have to say that spyderco is the only company that puts out more than one or two ergonomic knives. among the best of those IMHO is the native, calypso jr and the large wenger. the first two fit my hand great and the wenger...i don't know, it just feels good.

As everybody wrote - this is a very personal thing, but the new terzula looks great and it also has a VERY thick blade - which makes me feel at ease about applying allot of pressure and I just KNOW it will deliver what ever I demand of it - even though it is "only” a folder..

Which ever one you pick - its a good choice.

The answer to this question is simple: Buy them all, and find out for yourself.

For me, it would have to be the StarMate followed, oh, so closely by the Military. I do not have a Wegner, so I cannot speak to that model, but I would put the BF Native, the Endura98, and the Delica98 ahead of the Police, at least in stainless steel, which is what mine is.
