Which survival knife should I buy ?

@French, to mister moon ==> (jpeux pas faire de blague sur ton pseudo) ça fait plaisir de voir une francophone dans le coin ;).

@English now, you can read again ;)
Dont get me wrong, when I say careless I mean that I might hit a stone during chopping. But I will keep my blade clean and sharp I wont let it rust and I WILL NOT cut my arm ;)
I'm not some random kido looking for a rambo knife.

@Dag-nabit : Your right, I can't test theses knives, that's why I try to make my own opinion based on the others.

Update:
The bark river seems to be highly recommended
The fehrman looks good

What bother me, for the RC-5 is the 1095 steel.
It looks like there is not so many busse's fans.

Btw 0.25" is 0.6~cm and yes, I like thick blades ;)
for the length : 4" mini - 6" max

1095 is a fine steel. But it's like everything else: it has to be treated right. Heat treat and all that. It's actually my favorite material: easy to sharpen, takes a good edge, good and strong.

I say get the Bark River Aurora.

Hey,
just to let you know, I bought the Bark river Bravo 1
this one :

Maybe I'll buy the leather sheath later.

Thank you all for your help !

Excellent choice  The Bravo 1 is a tough no nonense knife. I have a Bravo 2 with black canvas micarta handles, the big brother to yours, and it is one heck of a knife.

Enjoy your Barkie and may it serve you well.

Kevin

In this category I like the Busse SAR4. Surprised nobody mentioned it.

My entire fixed blade collection is a SAR4, SAR8 and a Ocean Master Beta-T. Well, I do have one really nasty old pakistan bowie for ranch work. Those 4 knives cover all my outdoor needs reliably. The Busse knives are very tough and beautiful. Nice folks too.

I was going to suggest a Bark River Northstar, it's a bit more compact than the Bravo. But you've made a very decent choice there. Actually, I think the kydex sheath may be more practical than the leather version.I'm not a big fan of BR leather sheathes at all....

Send me an e-mail if you want details of knife dealers and reliable e-bayers who trade to Europe, I'm in the EU as well.

Salut! 'Guillaume'

if you do'nt go with a rat, the d2 ka-bar will handle all you can throw at it
have to admit the rats are more attractive

The one style no one - including myself mentioned was the canadian elliptical knife style. It is similar to that promotoed in the nessimuk trio

The Grohman GR4 survival knife looks very similar to the fixed blade in the trio. I cna see the shape would make food prep, dicing and chopping very easy - yet the point is still in line with the handle to allow for good control.

That is the area of my next knife purchase

Hey,
I've got my knife yesterday and I love it.
Can you advise me a good sharpening tool for the bravo 1 in A2 ?
And a good firestone ?

tx
bye

Sharpening your Bravo is going to be different than sharpening your other knives. Bark River knives use a convex edge geometry, which makes sharpening on a flat stone a little more tricky. Your best bet is to use some VERY fine sandpaper, lay it on a squishy surface like a mousepad, and gently draw the blade toward the spine (not carving forward with the edge, like you would on a stone). Treat it like a strop.

What is the best for my blade ?
"bark river sharpening kit" ? or simple sandpaper is enough?

offtopic : the Bark river's firemaker are way more expensive than the others, is it worth the price ? for instance vs the basic Swedish army firesteel

It depends on how cheap are you.

Do you really need a toilet or a simple hole dug in the mud is enough?

mh, if I can get a good edge with the sandpaper (with more effort) than the sharpennng kit, then I prefer the sandpaper.
But the sharpenning is really worth de price I'll take it ;)
