Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum but I've enjoyed reading lots of different posts. I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to, possibly because no 1 answer exists.
I'm looking for a close range weapon for personal defense. Specifically, for an shtf scenario what type of weapon should I look into purchasing? I have firearms covered, I'm looking for close range if someone gets through. I'm 6'3", 245 pounds so something of size and weight won't be a problem. I will be able to devote several hours a week for training but at this point I have zero training.
I'm open to all ideas; knives, swords, tomahawks, throwing weapons, etc. I need a weapon that can help me only in a tactical sense, I will be bugging in for this type of scenario so being able to construct a shelter, down a tree or other like tactics are not necessary. Any help with this question is greatly appreciated.

A knife is a good defensive weapon. I suggest the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie. You can get it from most reputable dealers for maybe $170 these days. For training, try Dwight C. McLemore's "Bowie and Big Knife Fighting System", available on the big river site for about $25.

Trench knife. Stab stab punch punch. Find one with a heavy pommel then you can also pummel.

Steel cap boots maybe?

I would suggest the training should come first, and that will lead you to the answer to your question.

I don't think a sword would be a good idea, especially for someone without any training. And certainly not in cramped close quarters. Even the samurai did not use his katana sword at home, you know. They used their wakizashi or tanto for close-in fighting indoors.

Just pistol whip them if they get too close.

Take up boxing training & turn that 245lbs of mall ninja, gun nut, paranoid fat into self assured muscle.

Not a bad idea the idea on boxing but to clarify; I avoid malls like the plague, if owning 3 guns makes me a nut so be it, I'm far from paranoid I just want to be prepared and my weight does not translate to being fat. Thanks for trying to help

Just stick with the Glock or 1911 and you'll have all you need...IMO.
I sure hope I'm right, because that's what I do.
My knives are not intended for self-defense.

I'm sick of reading about Yanks who want hunting & fighting knives when they don't hunt

or even hike in bear/puma/wolf country.
If you want a man killing blade for a psychotic collection buy a bayonet from an Army-Navy store. If you're lucky it might have human blood stain patina on it.

A lot of us so called Yanks hunt just a FYI. And your pics in my opinion don't represent a hunt as near as it dose a rundown. And I've lived in the south and have done the "hunt" you are portraying in orange orchards seems more like a prisoner "hunt" but us yanks don't know.

Ok. Here we go again (how many threads like this pop up every month? Nobody has heard of the "search" function?)

Given your specs, from bigger to smaller. Some are specific brands or models, some are generalisations or weapon styles:

1 - Double handed: Good quality Katana, Condor Dadao, Condor Discord, Double Bit Axe (Hultafors, CS Trail Boss...), Broadswords and Greatsworsd, CS Grosse Messer, CS Chinese War sword and Katana machetes, Spears and Polearms.

2- Heavy, one handed: Chinese Dao, Sabers and Cutlasses, Wakizashi, Tomahaks (SOG Fasthawk, SOG Vodoo hawk, Kershaw Siege, RMJ Tomahawks, Winkler Tomahawk, CS Spike hawk and others, Ontario SPAX, Schrade SCAXE hawks, etc.), Hatchets and small axes (Hultafors, Husqvarna, Estwing, etc.), Kukri (Himalayan Imports, Ghurka houses, KHHI, etc.), Smatchet, Sickles and machetes of all kind (Tramontina machetes, Condor, CS, Ontario, KaBar Parangatang, Imacasa, Marbles, Kerhaw Camp 10,14 and 18 etc.), Parangs, E-Neps, Sword Canes.

3 - Big knives: ESEE Junglas, Ontario RTAK and Ontario SP Series, CS Trailmaster, CS Natchez and Laredo Bowies, Randall knives, Condor Speed Bowie, KaBar Grass Machete and Kukri machete, KaBar Swabbie, Becker BK 9, most BUSSEE and SwampRat options.

4. Combat knives: Trench knives (CS Chaos series, for example), Daggers (CS Tai Pan and Scottish Dirk, KaBar EK and Chaos Dagger, Boker Applegate Fairbarn, Gerber MK II, Randal daggers), Military Bayonets and knives (KaBar 1217, Ontario SP1 and M9, Ontario Pilot Knife, SOG Bowies, Randall Fighting Knives, Chris Reeve Knives, CS OSS) CRKT Hissatsu and FE 9, most Spartan Blades models, most Entrek models, most Bowie Knives, most SubHilt knives, most Persian styled blades, most Tanto Blades (CS Magnum and Recon tanto, Cs Kobun, SOG Tsunami, KaBar Tanto, Benchmade Nirvamus), Dozier knives, many Customs (Loveless, Bagwell, Knight, etc.)

5 - "Combat" suitable folders: All Cold Steel Triad +5" folders, Emerson folders, Camillus CUDA and +5" folders, Spyderco Tatanka, Spyderco Police, CS Tiger Claw, Boker Jim Wagner RBB.

6- Other styles: Karambits (Emerson and FOX karambit, CS Tiger Claw, etc.) and Pikals (Spyderco P'kal), as well as many "last ditch/SD knives" (CS Spike Series, Spyderco Reverse, KaBar TDI, CS Double Agent, LaGriffe knife, Benchmade OCP, CS Desperado) and Push Daggers (Beware legality!...) like Benchmade Push Dagger, CS Safe Maker and Safe Keeper.

Of course, that is an incomplete list but will give you a primary idea of where start searching. Be realistic about concealabilty, carryability and legality of all those weapons. In most categories you can find from cheap production pieces to customs and high quality and high end versions. Be wise, be patient, choose properly and the most important thing...ENJOY your search!!

Big guy like you, in close quarters, should be swinging a flanged mace, breaking bones and smashing skulls without worrying about a blade penetrating and getting stuck, minimizing/diminishing its usefulness.

3-4" folding liner lock, ATS34/AUS8A/154CM clipped, with G10 or Micarta scales. Use it as an EDC and accessing it to open it will become very familiar and second nature. That's what you have to know under stress without stepping thru it with your mind. It will be needed elsewhere at that point.

Neck knives are more problematic in use, and push daggers usually illegal in many jurisdictions The CCW permit only covers the gun, society has made the knife something far more eeevil. When the knife can't even go in, then stainless ink pens or small flashlights are another choice and used the same ways.

Training from martial artists who work with the LEO and MIL community would benefit as they understand the essential reasons for self defense.
