Which Would You Rather Have...1 Case Or 5 Rough Riders?

Just based on the original question, I'd buy a single more expensive knive over 5 knives that tallied up to the same price as things currently stand for me now, as long as I felt I was getting value for my money with the single knife. Mainly because I have pretty much all the knives I want or need, so I don't really need 5 more inexpensive knives.

If I were just starting out collecting knives, as you are, and I wanted to learn about different patterns and styles without spending a lot of money, then I'd go for the 5 cheaper ones, recognizing that it's essentially a fee I'm paying for self-education. Also, it gives you lots of practice material for getting your sharpening skills up to speed, and sharpening is an essential skill for any knife owner who is going to use them for anything other than display pieces. Heck, sharpening, tinkering, and maintenance is a hobby unto itself for many of us, so sure, get the 5. You'll get full value out them just from the learning.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Well said.

All this talk about modern Cases is giving me goosebumps. I have just ordered a Case trapper, under the impression that only a tiny minority of their current offerings had QC issues. Because of my own faults and prejudices, I did not even consider the RRs.

I just wanted to post a follow up. I received my trapper in CV, and the knife is perfect.

I am now looking at their fixed blade offerings, but unfortunately everything seems to be in stainless.

I think the RRs are like the Imperial brand knives were back in the 50-60s, when I was growing up. They were meant to be an affordable knife a person could use. Some say the steel was very good, they just had mediocre handles. I think the RRs are a "good buy".
