Whips

Whips are another hobby I have been contemplating about getting into... but I'm still not sure. :)

It's a really fun hobby, there isn't really a point to it unless you're some kind of performer, but I'm hooked and it's something fun and different to play with in the outdoors . As long as you get along with your neighbors, they are some pretty LOUD toys.

Collecting whips can be a very expensive hobby, there's a reason I make my own. A quality leather whip will carry a price that rivals some custom knives, but they are gorgeous and will last generations if properly taken care of. A good kangaroo whip by a renowned maker will often retain or even increase in value over the years. David Morgan for example, ( he made and popularized the style of whip used in the Indiana Jones movies) now has 10 foot models that go for nearly $1000:eek: and that's without any fancy patterns or embellishments.

If you have some more recomondations for online whipmaking tutorials that would be great. I am putting in an order one of these days for some hundred feets of paracord to give this a try.
Are there any books you would recomend?

"How to Make Whips" by Ron Edwards is pretty much my whipmaking bible. I don't think it was written with the nylon whip maker in mind, but almost everything in there is transferable to paracord. It covers everything from handle making/materials, to the length and number of strands needed, and even shows you some basic turk's head knots and some fancy plaiting patterns. I must have gone through that book 20 times and still go back to it from time to time. Inside there are instructions for building snake, bull and stock whips.

there is a free online tutorial here http://www.whip-basics.de/images/gallery/Nylon_whip_tutorial_part_1.pdf

there are some better ones out there, but you will need to pay for them. Rhett Kelley has a good tutorial DVD out that goes through the steps on making a cow whip, but all the techniques can be used to make a bull, or snake whip also. The video gives you an over the shoulder view of all the steps and shows you how he plaits, which is something most tutorials assume you already know how to do. His website is www.cowwhips.com

another great tutorial is in the form of an e-book and is a little less expensive. It shows you how to make a 12 plait snake or bullwhip only no videos for this one. This is the one that helped me the most when learning, the methods can be tweaked and adapted to make a 16 plait whip (or more if you like) it can be found at www.neawhips.com. I believe he also has starter kits with the cores already made for you, but I could be mistaken.

Both of the guys mentioned above are great nylon whipmakers and are held in high regard because they produce some really nice quality made whips. They are also great guys and are always happy to lend a hand or answer questions you may have regarding their tutorials or any other whip making question for that matter.

Thank you very much. Just put in an order for the Ron Edwards book, and will look more into the onlinetutorials tonight.
I have one 8foot nylonwhip I bought years ago from the Sayoc Kali organisation and it has held up very very well with quite alot of use. But have many times thought about having both shorter and longer ones and after reading this thread the first time I`ve really wanted to make them myself. Just need to read more into it first.

Been makin whips for years I like the nylon alittle more then leather these days myself oh yeah I'm Miah Espinoza of Blind Mans Whips

Now, that's gutted paracord right? That might be a project to try out at some point.... even though I may look at going and buying one first. That's awesome stuff.

Yes, all of the strands are gutted before being braided into the whip

You really do beautiful work.

Considering the amount of time you put into making them, when I went to your website I was surprised how reasonable your prices are.

I have absolutely no "need" for one, but I'm getting strongly tempted.
