whittlin' with your edc

Working on a Cherry stick now.

I prefer hard woods. This one is Walnut whittled with a Case Half Congress:

Wow, that's awesome👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Agreed! This is awesome! I have made a few, er, ahem, attempts at whittling, so I know it requires an incredible amount of talent and patience to produces those kinds of results! Very nicely done.

Hickory - those are fantastic!

Y'all are really inspiring me to spend more time whittlin'. I've gotten pretty OK at turning sticks into smaller sticks, but I think I'll make a trip to the crafts store for a block of wood for a real project today...

That stick is awesome hickory and a ton of work for sure. Love it!!

It's been a long time since I whittled something, probably 5 or 6 years. I used to do it all the time when I was a kid, I never really made much, just sharpened sticks for the heck of it. The last real thing I made was one of those "chainsaw bears" about 4"-5" tall for my girlfriend. Luckily she's still around, and the bear found it's way to her grandma's house. Last I saw it had a pretty bad split going longways but I'll try and snag a picture of it when I can. I did it all with a leatherman wave. My hands sure hurt after that one, but it was worth it.

Great thread! I have attempted to whittle a few things with my 4" stockman in the past. Never quite turn out the way they look in the pictures!

On a side note, my wife and I just toured the Warther Museum in Dover, OH yesterday and it was amazing to see the items Ernest Warther carved over his lifetime. As a young boy he found a pocket knife in the road and this started his hobby in which he produced wooden chains, a ball in cage cane, trophies for the local kids, an elaborate plier tree, and some fantastic trains. He even designed his own carving knives as there wasnt really a market for what he specifically wanted. Really neat way to spend a Saturday. Matt

I don't whittle much, but I almost always have a half started project lying around that I'll just chip away at here and there. Lately it's been the chain links.

I did the majority of the whittling with the 15 forum knife which absolutely excelled with, in my opinion, just about the perfect blade set up. I have been day dreaming about building a custom whittling/ everyday pocket knife. It would be a split spring serpentine with a main clip, a sheepsfoot, and an ultra thin wharncliffe(like on the presidential).

There are some absolutely stunning whittling examples in this thread! It definitely inspires me to up my game.

Definitely get a pic of the bear for us...I would like to see it. I'm afraid I have zero artistic talent when it comes to things like this, but I like seeing what others create.

Anyone else like to do some casual whittling with your edc knife ?
I certainly do, I rarely ever end up with anything though.
Here's something I whipped up in 10min or less
...
I'd like to see some pics of things you guys might whittle when your board.
You call that "casual whittling"?!? That tiny knife is incredible, Hickory n steel (as are those little knives you've forged from nails)!!

Be careful mate because you begin whittling with your EDC and you end up like some of us edcing something for whittling with...

Beautiful work (and knife), Mateo!
(The hospitals don't mind you whittling while you wait, letting the chips fall wherever they may?)

I've seen some of that guy's work online, I think! Totally mind-boggling how gifted he was!

Love the chain links, Erik!

For me, "casual whittling" at the bus stop or taking the dogs out to do their business usually involves just little designs on a stick:

Since whittlin' is one of my main activities, any knife that is going to be carried has to be good for it. Whittlin' isn't the only thing I do with a knife, but it is one of the main ones. Actually I usually have a knife on me that is for whittlin', and one for "social work".

Nothing special, but I whittled a BBQ fork when I forgot mine at a cookout.

Worked just fine to poke n' flip a few hot dogs and sausages.

Got inspired by this thread and asked my daughter what she wanted... Should have known it would either be a unicorn or a dolphin... I'm sure the unicorn is next!

After some sanding

Nice work, everybody!

Got to the store yesterday and bought a block of basswood, then put on some tunes and embarked on my first chain link:

Nice!! Is that a 98? Is it too much for pocket carry?

Thanks GT,
I have a pretty good damage control protocol ;) I mostly do finishing detail carving so the chips are tiny and few,
And I pick up most of them afterwards.
Also I'm usually at the unexplored depths of hospitals where there's not a soul to be seen

Thanks! Yeah, it's a Tidioute 98 in ebony. I've actually been carrying it quite a lot recently. Rides really nice in pocket with the Northwoods sleeve, and I love the big handle for carving.
