I made this for my wife, but I didn't finish it until yesterday! Luckily, I had her a couple of other Valentines on Monday!

This started out as a block of pine. I only used these 2 Opinels for the carving.

Very nice, I like this. You sir do great work.btw did your wife like it?

Here's a little ball and cage I finished today. Made with another piece of pine and mainly the same two Opinels I used in my last carving. I always have a tough time get the ball very circular, so I figured I'd post a pic before I keep messing around with it and break it.

Wish I coulddo something like this. How long did it take you to do the ball in cage?

Thanks! I assure you, If I can do it anybody can. It just takes a sharp knife and a little patience.

I probably spent 3 or 4 hours on it over the course of a few days when I was bored.

I'm pretty sure that I'd need to take a trip to the ER for stitches somewhere along the way.

When I saw the the title of this thread it brought a smile to my face because I haven't seen anyone whittling in 30 years.
When it warms up a bit I think I will dig out some of my fathers old pocket knives and see if I can make a few toothpicks then I want to try

When it warms up a bit I think I will dig out some of my fathers old pocket knives and see if I can still make a few toothpicks then I want to try that ball in the cage thing which looks awesome.

And if you guys don't mind a new guy adding his two cents I would like to see a project thread so I can follow along.

Maybe we could get a "sticky"? and post pics of members projects. Just a thought.

i think a project sticky would be awesome.

thanks

Sorry fellas...it's actually a bit off-topic from the main thrust of this forum but we overlook that issue provided it stays on topic via the use of traditional knives. As it is we have more stickys than we can shake a stick at.

(Changed the title to "Whittling" to make it easier to find via "search".)

I got interested in carving and "tramp art" a few years back, and go through spurts of making stuff. I have a lot of chains and ball in cages and other stuff lying around. I think it's relaxing and satisfying to make. Last year, at Christmas, I carved and painted a bunch of little gnomes and gave them away. But I find the "puzzle" pieces- chains, ball in cage, etc.- much more interesting to make.

Here is another fun thing to carve: Pliers. When I first heard of making pliers out of one piece of wood, I thought it was a trick, my mind couldn't quite grasp how to pull it off. It took me a few attempts to get it right. You may be able to get a better idea of where to make cuts on the lower pic, which was my first success in getting the "mechanism" right.

It requires a thin blade and caution. Since you're making a lot of cuts by pressing straight down into the wood with the tip of the knife, it's easy to have the knife fold up if you aren't careful.

Well, Congratulations to you guys for these skills. I tried once to whittle a spoon nothing more, without sucess. Just a "date" at the local Emergency Station for stiching the hand...

Another fun one for me was carving a hatchet in a stump. It's pretty easy. Just find a limb with a smaller limb off the side, and start carving. This started as a limb off of an apple tree in my yard.
