First thing I've ever carved. Used a Schatt & Morgan Railsplitter.

I do a bit of whittling here and there. Basswood's good but I prefer to whittle sticks, it's just cheaper.

My first (and only) ball in cage that I did just recently, made of basswood.

What kind of wood did you use for the flower?

That's awesome Michael! Impressive

Did you do that free-form or follow a guide?

Thanks, Steve

I just free-formed through it. Which is why I ran out of room for the legs.

I was just about finished with a dog in the sitting position that turned out great. I was really proud of this one. I guess my German Short-Haired Pointer also noticed how proud I was of this other dog. He had his revenge on this intruder by taking him off my desk and turning him into wood-chips.

My newest jack knife is forming a bit of patina already on the clip blade. I used it to carve this claddagh pin for St. Patrick's Day. It's basswood soaked in linseed oil.

Thanks, David! Your work here has been inspiring. I'd like to try my hand at carving those pliers.

After a couple of months I finally finished up my first ball in cage. I probably spent 15-20 hours in working on it.

I ended up using my large Eye Brand stockman for the job. I actually bought a Queen half-whittler for this project, but its small size (3 1/8") just isn't that comfortable for me during long whittling sessions.

Ok so I have three case knives Ive had for a while a Larger amber bone stockman, yellow handle stockman, and a chestnut swayback jack. I recently had a lot of time and little todo and more to come so I wanted to try my hand at whittling. I tried a spoon first off and Id like to try a ball in cage but Ive run into a problem. How do you whittle the inwards, like making the bowl of the spoon or carving into the block with a ball in cage to form the ball. I would really appreciate pictures if you could. I must be missing some way of holding the knife to start making the cuts. Thankyou for any and alll help.

Let's keep the whittling posts and info to this thread, folks, so we don't have to move it elsewhere.

I'm still new to whittling, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. I don't think I used any special way of holding my knife. Just take your time and take off small bits at a time. Better to go slow than to start carving your hand up.

I recommend reading this thread as a good starting point.

Public Service Announcement: Yablanowitz has posted a request in the "Site Feedback" area requesting consideration for a sub-forum dedicated to Whittling and Wood Carving. If you'd like to support the creation of such a forum it might be worthwhile to chime in. Spark already seems amenable. Please keep the comments to that thread so that this one can stay on topic. Thanks.

EDITED TO ADD:

The new sub-forum for whittling and related projects is now open.
