After just having read Matt B's thread about why he likes swords and the following posts by others briefly describing a few of their interests, I became aware of how little we know about each other outside of our common thread (khukuris). Now I respect everyone's right to privacy (and dearly value my own), so I hope no one interprets this as an effort on my behalf to pry. I just thought that I would start a thread where those who would like to share more about themselves could do so.

Who is X-Head?

To get the ball rolling, I'll start with myself. I am a former 13-Foxtrot Weekend Warrior and Airborne 5 Jump Chump turned West Point cadet turned garbage man who plays guitar in a funk rock band and does code enforcement (mostly investigating major illegal dumping of construction debris) to pay the bills (not many funk rock fans in my town). I played the bagpipes at West Point though I'm no good at it and will scare you off with my playing. I ride horses, slay groundhogs and canoe the river on my parents' farm, and I'm a micro-brewery beer fanatic. I have an awesome wife & a 5 mo. old son who was born at home with the help of 2 midwives. I am 30 years old and still struggling through college (accounting mjr). After that I'll try for law school to study tax law & constitutional law. I believe there is only one true way, but I respect and will protect your right to follow whatever path you choose and will never shove my religion down someone elses' throat. I am proud of my American heritage and of our rebellious history, and the freedoms that our ancestors purchased with their blood and their lives. "X-Head" is a reference to my religion, my generation, my favorite TV show, and my favorite band. I guess that's everything except for my fingerprints & SSN. My signature below pretty much sums up my sentiments.

My intent is not for this to be a forum for politics or religion, but I recognize that in some people's cases (such as my own), their religious convictions are an inseperable part of their identity. I take mine with me everywhere I go, and I am a hollow husk without it. If I came off as preachy, let me know and I'll edit it.

Now you know who X-Head is. Who are you?

I DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE A COMMON MAN

"It is my right to be uncommon...if I can; I seek opportunity...not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stole calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud, and unafraid; to think and act for myself; enjoy the benefits of my creations and to face the world boldly and say,
This I have done, and this is what it means to be an American."

Ok, I'll bite... I'm 33, former soldier, married to a wonderful wife, and have a great 9 year-old daughter. I was a small arms repairman in the army, and as there's not a lot of demand for M-60 MG and .50BMG mechanics in the civilian world, I've been a power tool repairman for all these years now. Now, however, I repair wind turbines for a turbine manufacturer. I am a traditional archer and love traditional archery. I am a fan of traditional edged weapons. I like ancient military history, cooking ethnic foods, hiking, bowhunting, reading, and the Classical sculptures of Greece and Rome. Religiously, I am polytheistic--I worship the Old Gods and Goddesses. As I am mother is Lakota, I keep some of these Traditions as well. I'm a great fan of learning about the steppe nomads, both ancient and modern. Last but certainly not least, I help my wife with wild bird rescue (we take in orphaned nestlings and injured birds.) I am still saving for my first khuk. I'm hoping to have one before the year is out and that is my goal. I'd like to say thank you to everyone here for making me welcome.

Alright, here it goes. I am 28 and married, no kids. I work at the local state university in the post office. I am also an occasional student there majoring in psychology. I work with the high school youth group at my church. I lived a bad life before finding God and I want to help them avoid mistakes I made. My interests are guitars, music, woodcarving, science fiction/fantsy/horror, homebrewing, reptiles, camping/backbacking and knives. I do not own a television as I have found it distracts me from my other hobbies. I am just discovering khukuris. Most of my knives are slip joint folders as these work best for whittling; a khukuri is for camping and getting wood to whittle; plus it is just plain cool. My tag is my email address, my name is Bob. Feel free to email me to chat about any of the above interests. I just have to say that everyone here has been great and I have learned much from you all. Thanks.

I am 20 and a sophomore in college. I am a business major and a music minor. I play the piano and guitar. I hate pop culture and think that good music is almost dead. I listen to just about everything, but my favorites are Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, and Beethoven. I think Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) most closely resembles the Beethoven of our time. I get all sorts of hell for that, but he does show the most organization and development of any musician out there today. I hate TV. I love the Grand Tetons. I love fishing. I have absolutly no practical use for Khukuris but love them anyway. I have studied Karate for 7 years. If I had the funds I would own one of each knives BirGhorka makes. I love this forum. No offense to anyone but if you read some other forums you will find a lot of hostility and vulgarity, you don't find any of that here. I think this forum has the nicest and funniest people. I need more knives...

Kevan,
What type of bow do you use? Longbow, selfbow, or recurve. I have a few longbows, my favorite is a 142# martin pioneer longbow.
I used to hunt with a 90# martin longbow, but I sold it (mistake). I only hunt with traditional equipment on the ground no treestands. And khukuris seem to have taken over my house. I also find a use for one just about every day.

I'm a soon-to-be twenty year old (by the end of this month). I'm a full time college student, midway through my second-to-last semester at the community college. Not sure what career I plan to enter yet (though I am half-pondering the idea of something in the field of Herpetology. I've been interested in khukuris for three or four years, having bought my first HI khuk about two years ago.

I'm 44, married (still to same gal) with three children - one boy 14 & twin girls nearly 12. Once an ecomonic refugee from Oregon, I'm in sunny SoCal plying my trade as a senior administrator in a community college. Education wise, I've accumulated a BA in history, a masters in accounting, and an MBA (I was eager in my youth). I don't think my life is as exciting as some on the forum - most of my activities are planned by my family and paying for every thing makes working kinda necessary. I've had a love of knives and other sharp things ever since I can remember. :cool

I am 24, married with a 5 month old son. A year and a half ago we moved to Cambridge MA so I could go to graduate school. I study acoustics, in particular ocean acoustics (sonar, whale noises, etc). With a new son and grad school I find I don't have much time for my hobbies but when I can I like to bicycle, hike, run, shoot, read and play mindless computer games. As an engineer I have an interest in all sorts of tools, machines and gizmos (hence my interest in khuks).

Long Rifle, you mentioned the Tetons. I'm from Moscow Idaho (North end of the state). I have to say I prefer the Seven Devils.

I guess if there's a common interest in something as unusual as khukuris it shouldn't be surprising that we'd all have some other interests in common too...

I'm interested in martial arts (off and on for the last 18 years), archery (also traditional, but there's no way I could draw a 142# bow - I'm just getting my feet wet again after years of not shooting.) Taste in music runs the gamut, ranging from the Tuvan throat singers and Zappa to Scottish bagpipes, Beethoven, Mozart, Nine Inch Nails and Korn. A little something to irritate everyone.

(Also a Monty Python fan!)

Josh,
I grew up in Cambridge, and still work there.

Ok, here goes

I'm a 17 (soon to be 18) Freshman in college telecommunications major (though that will probably change)who's interested in just about anything. Although classes and Fraternity pledging are gobbling up my life now, most of my time used to go to working out, spending time with my buddies, listening to music, and Martial Arts. When i said I'm interested in anything I mean it...I'll try practically anything

Matt

Right! Here goes nothing... I'm a relatively old man compared to most. I'm 43, married for the third time (by which you can safely conclude I am a supreme optimist!), have two beautiful boys, Branwell and Robin, aged 8 & 7 respectively. I am a senior staff nurse and work in an intensive care psychiatric unit - which may sound like I am some kind of tough guy... Far from it, just a well trained guy!
My interests are fishing, reading, I have studied hand made fine furniture, and can make my own. I study history on an amateur level, and have a keen interest in the late medieval period in Europe and the civil war era, the period 1639 - 1690-ish. I'm deeply interested also in how the civil wars affected the US and Canada, but this is a little researched subject. I hope to do much more work on this when I retire... I like to have khukuris about the place, although I don't think I'm as obsesive as some of you guys in the forum.

Well, I like loads of stuff really, but I'm lazy and don't do too much interesting stuff anymore. I use my kids as an excuse for this...
I've had loads of different and interesting work in the past. Gutted fish in the Shetland Isles, fixed cars, been a tool cutter and grinder.. ooh all sorts. I have some military service, which is best not discussed too openly.
I would say the most important thing in my life is the happiness and welfare of my kids.

I'm 55, happily married to the same women since the beginning of time, two grown kids -- one of each. Put myself through college, went into the Air Force during which time I was commander of a Titan II nuclear missle complex in Arizona, left the service to teach for five years, left teaching to work construction for a while (boilermaker foreman), worked on my Ph.D., took my present job 20 years ago. I work for the daily newspaper in Baton Rouge. My job involves a lot of things, but the thing I enjoy most is writing a weekly half-page column called BACKGROUND which is, basically a news-analysis feature. Interestingly, it was when I was doing research for BACKGROUND regarding the situation in E. Timor a while back that I came across mention of the Gorkhas, which piqued my curiosity and led me into info about khuks -- and I end up with HIKV. Fifteen years ago I began working as a reserve deputy sheriff -- which, in this parish (county, to you folks) means doing the exact same things the "regulars" do except I don't get paid. I carry a full commission, have my own unit (patrol car), and patrol one-man. My hobbies are motorcycles, camping, handguns, playing in the dirt (yardwork), reading, and khuks. Being interested in the Orient, I used to be very much into bonsai (the little Japanese trees) but some years back I had to go on a business trip for a few weeks and I returned to find that my wife had forgotten to water my 150 plus plants. You can imagine how I felt -- some of the trees had been in training for many years. Politically, I tend to be a bit conservative -- but I'm unpredictable. For instance, I'm voting for Ralph Nader this go around (for a whole bunch of reasons), a decision that has some of my friends wondering about me. I'm very outspoken and prone to get on my soapbox and I enjoy a good, heated debate about anything. As any of my friends are quick to point out, I have an opinion on everything, and knowing nothing about the topic under discussion in no way deters me. So there, that's pretty much me -- warts and all.

I'm 26,self employed carpenter/contractor last 3 yrs. 4yrs before that I worked for construction companys. joined the Navy on my 17th birthday,2yrs. saw the tail end of the gulf and the "victory tour" back home to WA. then spent my GI bill at UW...BABA. divorced about 2 yrs. but I've had a steady girl now for 10 mo. Avid gardener,I'm also a member of the log home builders association of north america...built two log homes and two straight houses on the side since '95 (with a lot of help from my family to finance the first one!)I hunt & fish but not as much as I'd like to.you guys hunting with longbows amaze me! Hard enough with a good compound. Oh yeah gotta add I've had a 90# dobie/husky/pitt/dane mutt thats been following me around for the last six years or so... Brent

My favorite subject: me.

55, live in San Francisco and have been on the creative side of advertising/marketing on and off since 1972.

Went to Syracuse University, did a stint in the Navy and have 2 terrific kids who at 27 and 30 are doing absolutely great with their own careers. have collected arms since I was 13, but only own kukris and koras now.

I love animals because they're honest.

Don't own a car but have 4 motorcycles. Love to cook and eat, travel quite a bit for business and pleasure, am a voracious reader but am incredibly lazy. My great goal is to write "the" book on kukris.

If it wasn't for Bill Martino I would have missed some wonderful things in life plus a hobby that fills my idle hours and thensome.
