Who can tell me if this is fake - Strider SMF

Well thanks for clearing that up for me guys, I'm just really let down. I was hoping I was going to get this absolute tank. I'm looking for the next step up from my ZT 0301, I want a beefy blade, lockup and handle.

I bought it from a guy on Bladeforums, he's refunded me and I'm sending it back. On his original post someone said if its u stamped it's S30v, but it doesn't say anywhere. If this actually is a strider, I'm very sorely disappointed.

Striders often aren't marked when it is S30V or S35VN. They mark all their other steels, but if it is un-marked and a Strider it is S30V or S35VN. I thought it was marked even less than this but of my 3 current S30V SnG's 2 are marked(lego's, flat grind) and 1 not(CC, 3/4 grind). Strider uses all sort of stamps and it is very hard to compare them by the stamps.

I'd have to agree. It looks like the real deal to me too.

If the SMF isn't beefy enough for you, maybe try a Grayman Satu. It's an Abrams Tank of a knife:

That SMF is legit. As other have said, Strider does not mark, or rarely marks the steel if S30V. They mark all their other steels. Also the stop pins are not always silver....just look at Striders site. The logo looks just like my SMF that I got from a Strider dealer.

Thing about Strider is they kinda do what they want...so there is no set standard on how it is finished.

But I will say that my SMF DGG does not feel as solid as my Lego.

Looks legit to me. If you wanted the beefier model why didn't you buy a lego instead of the DGG?
I prefer DGG's myself but if you wanted the full thickness of the titanium and G-10 you should have
gone with a lego model (standard).

As stated, S30V is not always marked on Striders, their stop pins come shiny sometimes, sometimes
not, and that also is not an older model, as it has the newer flattened lock face.
Best of luck to you in your mission.

It's too bad you asked for a refund before knowing the knife. Because that is a great knife there.

I dunno guys, this thing just doesn't feel like the DDG SMF I payed with that my buddy got from BladeHQ. It just doesn't have the same lockup and feel like it's the right quality.
was that a DGG you compared it to or a DDC(Dwyer custom)?

When I wrote this I thought the DDG was a typo of some sort. Since then I see DDG stands for the custom Dwyer gunner-not really a fair comparison to the production model.
never too old to learn something :)

That's a legit strider. I have never seen a DGG 3/4 black dlc/cerakote clone. All the DGG clones I have seen were satin, bead blast, or TiNi finished. Also, most clones erroneously have the BOS insignia stamped on the blade.

If the gunner you have feels "flimsy". Try a lego version. Those are my favorite.

^^x2
I've had the DGG ans the Lego. And the Lego feels way more solid. The DGG has a totally different feel to it. It's a lot thinner than the Lego version.

China is getting out of hand with these fakes. We have 2 at our shop just to show people how hard it is to distinguish real from fake. Best bet is buy from authorized dealers only. You might pay a little more, but you'll also sleep better at night lol

I search aliexpress with "D2 titanium" and all the major mid-tech manufacturers periodically to bone up on what I can't trust to be legit on eBay. Most Strider clones appear to be made by three distinct companies, each with their own "style" of cloning the knives. There are cheap, crappy SNGs made of 440A that are all stamped with the BOS logo, there are D2/Ti clones that are often in a nightmare grind with a tan colored backspacer, and then there is a lego and a gunner grip SMF. The Lego is green and the gunner grip has black oxide ghost striping. They're all pretty distinct thus far.

Spyderco fakes are where it gets kinda scary. Hungarians, Southards, Enduras, Paramilitaries, Militaries, Ti millies (with a lockbar insert...!) - and more. ZT clones are pretty laughable or obvious for the most part except for the 0801 and 0777 clones that are kicking around. The 0801 clones all have the old black-and-yellow box, but come with papers and everything.

I thought everyone distinguished that original posters is real though.

Yeah I try to keep up on all that stuff too, but then every once in awhile some new site/maker pops up with some new fix to their previous problems. Idk to me its just got to the point where I just won't buy online from anyone but an authorized dealer. I still get people coming to the shop where I work every month asking us "Is this a fake?" and I just dont have too much sympathy for the ones who should know better. (to clarify, not talking about the OP right now) but these guys are constantly changing and putting newer, better stuff out there. Chris Reeve even sent out warning emails for us to show customers telling them how hard it can be to tell the difference anymore as well as how its constantly evolving.
I personally ordered a Buck Hartsook neck knife and it was a fake. Was so pissed off... and from a guy with tons of good feedback. Luckily I know enough about steel to tell it was fake, but everything was dead on. We even recently just got a fake CRK that was unbelievable how well it was done.

True, and the OP still sent it back out of fear that it wasn't. That's my point is that its sad we can't even make what should be a legitimate purchase without these worries.
