Who carries for self-defense?

I would suggest you to take some training
course on self defense using a knife or
whatever comes in your hand if not bare
handed... anyhow, if you don't have time
to draw your glock, for deterrence and/or
shoot (serious uglies and problems ahead
in any case), you won't neither have time
to deploy a knife...
At least, keep a small knife on you as a
last ditch / backup, something like a:
- Perrin fixed and versatile
- La griffe fixed and SD oriented
- native folding and versatile
- ladyhawk folding and SD oriented.

Hope this approach can be of some
enlightment :)

Personnaly I use a AFCK as EDC,or sometimes a Buck 112 but since I think a folder knife is a very poor choice in self -defense I will recomand to back it up with a good pepper spray and/or ASP baton!
But don't MISUNDERSTAND me, I didn't said a knife is useless in self defense, the knife you clip in your pocket will surely help you out of a bear hug, but in a conflict situation where the other guy MAY have a blade too and will surely pull it out if you pull your out I'll prefer to Spray and run!And keep my AFCK in my pocket as the last ultimative solution.:D

Me do. Carrying a Buck Strider 880SP.
In my country gun is illegal for civilian to own.
Just for one time, should be January this year, in a night,
while on my way home, walking, with some camera bags in hand,
3 obvious bad guys approached to me, blocking my way.
Then I pulled out 880SP from waist pouch, with a loud sound,
but didn't open the blade. I guess my action and the sound
made the guys think twice. And they stopped there. So I passed
by. So a closed folder sometimes also can work.

I only carry a "tool" for "utility" purposes. For this I carry a Buck Strider drop-point, a CRKT Professional Kasper, or a Cold Steel El Hombre. And, officer, I just never know when I might need to cut a string, or open a box....:p

A handgun, is of course, optimal. But, bear in mind, that in some states, you cannot carry a firearm into any establishment that serves alcohol even with a CCW. That's exactly where you need a good knife. The laws pertain to firearms, not knives in that regard. Places such as Red Lobster, Outback Steakhouse and so forth, you cannot carry your CCW handgun in there because they serve alcohol. So, a good knife keeps you defended. Just as a handgun is used to fight your way back to your rifle, a knife is used to fight your way back to your handgun in some cases.

I don't carry a knife for the purpose of self defense, and have no aspirations of being a ninja. But if the situation were to call upon the need, I do have a nice big Spydie in my pocket.

I'm a much faster runner than I am a warrior.

If I think I'm in distress, I avoid the area.

If I cannot, I disregard knives, and choose a firearm. It's a custom .380 ACP for carry if smaller arms are needed, or if discretion is a problem. It's a SW 4516 if something bigger fits the bill.

If I'm wandering in the boonies, I carry one of my beloved 1911s.

I'm too old to wrestle with some young buck, I have no desire to get cut for foolish honor, and my wife should not have to bury her husband because some blowhard cannot control his emotions.

Like all reasonable men, I will try to run, or not even be there to begin with. But if the clown is foolish enough to brandish a bowie knife, I believe his choice has already been made. I know my choice was made decades ago.

I never go anywhere (except showering) without something (usually a Spydie) clipped to me. I never expect to ever have to use a knife in SD, because I'm a pretty mellow sort of person - and, I'm ugly enough that most people don't seem to want to approach me :D

I do, however, usually have as EDC a serrated Delica in one pocket, and a PE in the other (front pockets). That way, if some nut case
backs me into a corner, at least I have a reasonably good chance of causing him/her(?!) to change their mind. I would think, though, that I'd be aware enough to avoid the situation in the first place...

I carry one of two Bud Nealys for SD, an Aikuchi he made for me when he first started back in the early 80's, and a Nealy Stinger I just bought at the last ECCK show, I'll post some pics later.

Funny, I always carried a knife as a backup to either my Glock 26 (summer) or Glock 30 (winter) for SD. However, one day I came to the conclusion that while I know how to use my gun, I really have no idea what to do if I ever had to depend on the knife other than go berserk. So I recently started training in Sayoc Kali so if the need ever arose I would be prepared.

I actually don't carry any knives for SD, but I do have some "non-weapons" that I do carry. One of them is a 5" carpenters nail wrapped in a small piece of duct tape on the head. I've been carrying this type of SD device since I was a kid. Other weapons include a chain, a bolo made from 550 cord and two small padlocks, and a tightly rolled copy of Tactical Knives magazine. In the outdoors I do have a bowie of some type. Usually I carry the Cold Steel Bush Ranger in AUS-8a. A now discontinued product. But don't tell the park rangers. :D

With legal issues aside, whole heartily I don't carry for SD expect when certain circumstances when my life is endangered and I cannot rely on my bare hads and a pair of boots.

Anytime a knife is going to be used, it's going to be messy, and considering what can happen, a knife wouldn't be my first choice for a weapon in a SD situation (eg gun if I could carry legally) But I do have a nice large spydie clipped or a fixed blade visible at all times (when I carry it that way) if I have no other options. I'm also trained with knives, other weapons and un-armed combat (Judo and kickboxing mostly), I'm not the best, but I think I know a little.

Jman, I agree with you, I really don't want to cut someone, but a folded large carry can make an excellent kuboton

I don't think any of us are going to disagree with the idea that it's always better to run away if you can.

I also don't think anyone will disagree with the idea that a knife is truly a weapon of last resort. Guns sticks pepper spray baseball bats... lots of things are better than a knife.

If someone sticks a weapon in my face and demands my money he can have it. But unfortunatly that isn't always the scenario. I was attacked myself some months ago and it's been a life changing experience for me. I was very lucky I didn't get hurt by the grace of God. But here in my local community lately there's been 2 women and a man stabbed in the last 12 days. The attacker simply came at them without warning and cut them badly. He only robbed one of them, and she was not given a chance to hand it over without a fight.

I'd go get a concealed carry permit (for a handgun) but it would be nigh useless since the only places I go are places where conceal carry of a pistol is a no go: work (I work in a school), church, government buildings... etc. I keep a gun safely stashed in the truck (which is legal without a permit) and I have plenty at home.

Even if I were in a different line of work where I could carry a handgun, I'd still have a knife or three. The more options you give yourself the better off you are. And knives are definitely an option.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Spyderco Merlin (spyderedge - frn)

I carry a knife for utility purposes. But in dangerous situations my spydie are welcome.

I only carry for utility NEVER for self defense. Of course my utility knives are a Spydie Police, SOG X-ray Vision, and a Boker Brend.:D ;)

Now I didn't my primary SD was a knife, I carry one as part of my EDC for the sole purpose of being a last ditch SD, my CC is usualyy a Browning 9 mm or a Taurus 9mm, my prefered SD choice a 1980's White Western Star.

I'm shocked!

USUALLY, on threads like this, there's always at least SOMEONE - usually several people - that come on these threads that say DON'T carry a knife at ALL for self-defense unless you have knife training and even then you probably shouldn't do it.

I was waiting for someone to say that because I was going to disagree with it based on our 2nd Ammendment to our Constitution and the fact that a knife can be an equalizer even with people with no training vs. being helpless against an attacker.

It didn't happen this time, yet.

I carry a primary knife that's a work knife and I also carry a Emerson Commander WAVE just because of the WAVE. I also carry, VERY concealed, a small knife in the off-chance that I'm captured and/or tied up or something and disarmed of the knives they can find.

I've seen knife sparing and I've also cut myself badly a couple times. It makes me sick to my stomach to even THINK of getting in a knife fight with someone, but still, to save my or a loved-one's life...

I would give up my money or run my ass off first and be sure to be able to give a REALLY good description of the perp to the cops!
