production knives? thanks

i'm looking for folders :)

Hinderer and Obenauf are "custom" makers. Strider is production but their knives (folders) are more geared to military and LE. William Henry won't make a left hand knife but the ones I've seen seem pretty flimsy. I suppose you could get a real good Syderco and as far as bang for the buck goes you can't beat the Buck 110.

Ya, strider knives are definatly not a blade to whip out in a diner haha.

Custom knives are fine I guess, as long as they are possible to get and in the same price range as CRK.

If you want a folder that won't scare the folks at dinner, the CR Mnandi is the ticket. I really like the Mnandi.

The Bradley's do not come close to the sebs in quality. They are what they are, which is not a bad knife for the price, but they are definitely not CRK-comparable.

If you try to find a cheaper alternative to the CRK, you will end up wanting one anyway and will spend even more money in the end.

No substitute satisfies like a Sebe.

Check out Greg Lightfoot's folders. I own a Suppressor and its awesome for a liner lock knife. Smoother than a Seb! Don't flame me for that on the CRK forum because I own seven CRK knives!

I have two Strider SMF's but they are bad ass and when I did pull one out at a barbeque, a neighbour asked me if it was illegal. LOL.

Scott Cook Lochsa is as rare as hen's teeth. If you ever get one, you are a better man than me, so good luck with that.

for a folder? no one i can think of.

you are really moving in to custom territory here.

the strider folders are great, but normally appeal to a different demographic.

as far as cost, the plain sebenzas are pricier than other production folders, but less than most customs.

my lightfoot is also great, but i think most would consider greg's work to be of the custom variety.

I showed a neighbor of mine my Umfaan and she got very quiet and asked "Are you allowed to carry that?"

Baa-aa-aa.

The Benchmade Skirmish is a wicked ti framelock, really nice, and the Darrel Ralph mid-tech Combat Elites are almost like oversized Sebenzas.

I'll second the Bradley. I've got one of their balisongs and in terms of fit and finish it quite comfortably compares with my Sebenza.

Of course, Bradley doesn't make left-handed frame-locks, so they STILL aren't as good as CRK...;)

Honestly..I have had so many different fixed blades and as for detail to finish, nothing compares to the CRK one piece range. They are a pleasure to behold. Strength wise, Busse flogs them. But the one piece range in CRK is just so classy!

Chris nailed that folder design, the Sebenza. For all that the knife is, it is hard to beat. It's all good, though.

I totally agree with what he said!! There is NO production knife that comes close to a Sebenza, NONE!!

That "production" designation might be a little misleading.

Not to stray O/T, but I've never really understood why the term "custom" was used the way it is in the knife world. There are lots of made-by-hand, made-in-small-batches pattern knives that are production items and yet commonly referred to as custom knives.

IMO, the thing that sets the CRK folders apart from many other knives is the quality of their fit... which requires more individual hand attention than would be practical with a high-volume product.

So, the CRK folders are going to be more comperable with hand-made, working knives that are sometimes thought of as customs, like the XM-18.

My bet is that Tom Krein's folder will compete with the Sebenza, when he gets around to producing it.

Certainly you're not going to find competition for CRK from the likes of Benchmade and Spyderco.

Considering their price point and availability, I guess the CRK folders are sort of in a class by themselves. You could spend $150 and get a good solid knife that's more disposable. Or you could spend $600 and get something a little more refined, like maybe a TNT.
