Who else doesn't like the RC-3 sheath?

Hi,

Well, I have got my RAT Pack knife now for a while and I absolutely love the knife.
It is now my favorite ESEE knife, sharp, exactly the right size etc.

There's just one thing that really bugs me: the sheath..

I think it is too tight, trying to get the knife out shouldn't be that hard.
Also, puttin' it back in almost requires full attention and good aiming.
This was quite different to the sheath of the RC-4.
Man, that thing was just perfect, easy one thumb opening, and putting it back in could be done without looking.

So, who else didn't like the sheath and got a custom one?
If so, please tell or show me what kind of sheath you got.

Ps, not trying to bash ESEE, I'm a true RAT Packer and great fan of what you guys are doing ;)

I too prefer the kydex of the 4 over the molded sheath of the 3. My sheath for my 3 isn’t super tight and comes out fine with a push of the thumb. It loosened up a bit with some use.

I would almost say that I prefer the RC-3 sheath over the RC-4.

It is kinda hard to fit back in, but I just pay closer attention (as you should when pointing sharp stuff at your body) and I have no problem.

The sheath that came with my RC-3 is extremely tight. I was afraid I might slip and cut myself when straining to pull the knife. OK, it wasn't that bad, but it is definitely tighter than it should be.

the stock sheath for the 3 and 6 take some time to 'wear in' Once they do it's smooth and easy. Here's a photo of the kydex i got from Doublebarrel:

I like the Kydex sheath of the HESTs and the RC4 better than the molded sheath of the Izula. I'm not crazy about the little retention ("studs?")...plus I'd much rather have it in tan like the knife itself. No biggie, I just had a friend, who is making a sheath for my wife's Aviator, make another sheath for it for me...which I'm still waiting on lol. There are several around the forums who make sheaths. I'll show the sheaths I had Marion make for me when I get them, he's making one for Lisa's Aviator, a tan one for my tan Izula, and also a tan sheath for one of my HESTs.

Does he make these for public consumption? In other colors?

As good as the factory plastic sheaths are, kydex like this really is worth the extra investment IMO. Especially when you can choose such nice colors.

Site's under construction, But there's a contact email. Also got a fold over izula sheath from him. Probably going to order another one for my new izula, and possibly a fold over HEST for pocketing it. I love the stock sheaths, but I tend to lock multiple sheaths to all my gear so I dont have to swap them out when I take different bags.

I like the fact that it is so tight, I carry my blade scout style so losing my blade is a worry with some; but that is'nt the case with my R&P knife. I agree about re-sheathing being somewhat combersome.

Factory sheath are pretty good IMO ,but plenty of aftermarket Leather & Kydex sheath to please all (maybe) :D

Wonder if I could get a leather sheath made, messenger bag style, to carry every esee knife model. Course as soon as I do they'll make a new one :)

It's not that bad, I use my thumb to get the blade out with no issues.

Kydex is nicer, but more expensive. I can deal with the molded plastic sheath, and when I can't there are plenty of aftermarket sheath makers out there.

I will admit that I don't love the RC-e's sheath, but it's not bad enough to make me want to make one for it. When I got mine, it was too tight, but I also carry my RC-3 and use it every single day. After a while, it did kind of break in. Now it seems to have just the right amount of retention.

Yes, I had the same experience with the RAT Pack knife sheath. Mine was so tight, I thought it was stuck for good!

It's worn in abit from repeated use, but it's still tighter than I like.

Now the RC-4 Kydex sheath, that one is perfect!! I really like the Kydex sheath over the plastic.

Good quality leather is my first choice though!

Cheap leather - I have no use for it.

i've seen some web sites selling the rc3 with a kydex sheath. Can you get them with kydex?

I prefer my kydex over the stock sheath. The stock one wasn't tight but it rattled in the sheath. Nothing major but it got annoying.

I find my molded sheath that came with the Izula to be a bit snug.. but I guess it will become looser once i break it in.. is the HEST sheath similar to the Izula one? I'm still waiting for my HEST to arrive
