who else hates the black clips?

I have two Delicas — one blue, one green — and a little spare time one weekend, so I gave one a brushed finish, removing the black paint.

I think it turned out OK:

I prefer the wire clip on the UKPK/Caly3, though.

I don't mind my black clips. As mentioned they do tend to hide better than the shiny ones. On the other hand I also have the shiny ones.

Easy enough as you can see above in holygoat's post... fine sandpaper and just slowly polish away :)

I like bBlack clips.

I HATE chipping black clips.

Summed it up for me. On a side note, maybe it's just been the particular screws I've had, but on both knives that I've carried that had a black clip and clip screws, the clips have held up just fine, but whatever was on the screws rubbed off a fair bit.

Black clips are ok on black handles, but I wish the foliage green models would come with silver or gray clips. My all time favorites are wire clips though.

I like the black clip, its keeps my knife more hidden when clipped into my pocket. I just friggin hate when the paint starts to chip. I've heard using a zippo to darken the clip...i dunno how that works.

I've thought about that, too. I've given some metal parts color like the rainbow kershaw leeks have with fire before.

Any opinion on burning clips for color/blackening?

I like satin finished clips with lighter colored pants and black clips for darker clothing. That way my knife is less noticeable. I try not to scare my non-knife coworkers! It would be nice if there was a sturdy, quick-change clip available...AND a black coating that lasted more than a few weeks without chipping.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some of the traction tape. Kinda like what guys use on skate boards. Remove clip, put tape on, shave edges with x-axto knife, re-install and forget about peeling black paint. I read about doing this from a site that did modified Benchmade AFCKs. The traction tape was meant to enhance your grip on the knife. But the plus is that, unlike paint it does not peel. I did several of my knives last year and the tape is still there and has not peeled. Eventually I will get around to doing all of them, as I do not like shiny clips.
On knifes and my Surefire U2 flashlight that have wire clips, I install 1/8" I.D. heat shrink tube to get the black out look. It is kinda difficult to get around the bends on the wire clips, but a little persistence pays off here. Then apply heat from the special heat gun and when it shrinks tight, perfection.

SEE YA!

I've carried my Caly for over 6 months with no chipping and use it a dozen times a day. My knives are all 'tools' and get used but I don't 'abuse' them either.

I like the black clips.

Here is a pic of a Delica with a sanded clip and a Native showing wear.

I don't mind black I just think a harder coating would last longer.

It was easy to take the paint of the clip with a Dremel, it kind of has a machined look.

I never 'modify' my Spydies. If it comes with a black clip, then that's the way it stays, wear or no wear. Besides, some wear adds character. ;)

Funny... If all I didn't like was the coloration of the belt clip on my knives, I'd be pretty darn happy.

I'd love to see more titanium clips like on the Salt knives. Look great when the paint is stripped off:D

STR makes extremely nice titanium clips for Spydies:thumbup: (sorry bout the light in the picture:o)

Actually, i really like the black clips. I'm having a khaki one made from STR, but all my others have black.

I wear black slacks alot (being in the food business it helps to hide any food accidents) and the black clips are great for shying away from attention.

If the knife has a black clip, I get pissed when I scratch it and the silver shows underneath. If it's a shiny silver clip, I get pissed when I scratch it and mar its shiny perfection.

So if it's a user knife, I eventually don't care if the clip gets scratched up and shows wear. As for black vs shiny, it depends on the knife. My 710HS has black handles, a black blade, and it looks fine with a beat up black clip. My 940D2CF looks better with a silver clip (I swapped the black clip), and even though it's beat up and scratched (rather badly, I took a spill on my bike and the knife took some of the brunt), it looks better than the black one.

The only Spyders I carry with any regularity are a C3 ZDP/CF and a Tasman Salt. I really like the wire clip, because even though it's not coated, it's darkened and low-profile. The Tasman Salt looks just fine with its beat-up black clip (more bare Ti than black these days).

In the end, I think it depends on the knife whether it looks better with a black clip or shiny one. But most knives that look better black look fine with a beat up one, less so with knives that look better with a shiny one.

If its gotta be shiny, I get them bead blasted especially when my pants are sand or khaki colored. Otherwise all black baby!
