Who has cut yourself well enough to give up knives?

Yesterday in deer camp a fellow hunter cut his finger to the bone. No doubt, made my knees quiver, can't stand human blood. Animal ok. Who has had a cut and quit fooling with knives? Or if you haven't, what's the chance?

I think this is the wrong place to look for people who have stopped fooling with knives. I look at it this way, who would stop driving because of a bad accident? Cutting and driving are both things that people do because they have to, not just because they like knives or cars. :)

Well, don't give up yet...you could always change the question to "who WOULD give up knives"...I have often thought about this myself...I have cut myself quite a few times (as some will attest <rolleyes>) but it was never too serious and it didn't bother me at all...but what if something serious happened? What if you had to cut someone in a self-defense situation? I don't want to "paint the devil on the wall" but I think these questions are more difficult to answer than a knife knut might think...

Seems like a good opportunity to share our horror stories! ;)

I cut the webbing between my thumb and forefinger in half with a Gerber Multi-tool serrated blade. I was cutting the top off a plastic bucket and was applying a lot of pressure. The blade slipped free causing the bucket to fall and my other hand to come together with the knife hand. Deep nasty jagged cut, I could see inside my hand, almost passed out. It took a long time to heal but I sustained no permanent damage. Lucky. I haven't sworn off knives, but I sure pay attention.

I cut myself pretty darn bad with a very sharp Uncle Henry lock blade.
I was drunk at the time and playing around with it you know flicking it open really fast.
Well anyways I fumbled around and lost my grip on it and while trying to get a hold on it I ripped straight through my jeans and my leg right there at the calf muscle. It took 22 stitches to sew it up. I still love my knives, I just have more respect for them now.

I have cut myself a number of times, and also had knife blades grabbed by buffing wheels, but never had anything serious happen. It makes me be more careful the next time.

I think to a certain extent, it is necessary to get cut. Until then, you are only being lucky. Some lessons you have to learn the hard way.

I don't think there would be any knife accident that would make me give up knives. I might just stop making, instead.

I have a good one. How about would you give up drinking to have knives? LOL Or do you have a designated knife handler?.........R

I sliced my thumb to the bone with a roast beef slicing knife, in a kitchen where I worked in High School (decades ago).

Never thought it was the KNIFE'S fault!

Well, I've got two answers to this question :)

It was a cut that got me started into knives. Specifically, cutting open a plastic tie with a SAK classic (the keychain kind). I applied too much force, the blade slipped and my arm swung wild. It sliced me right across two of my knuckles. It was then that I decided I needed something with a more substantial grip, a lock, and sharp!

As for giving up knives, I've never thought to do that. However, I did give up balisong manipulation after I managed to sink a BM 43A into my right index finger. Oh, I manipulated a few times after that, but the cold sweat that developed on my hands told me that I was just asking for another kiss....:) It probably wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't seen the blade swing into my index finger, pendulum style

I was cutting a motorcycle handle bar grip off, using a Buck 110, when it slipped, sinking into my index finger. No big deal I thought, until I realized that I couldn't move the tip of that finger. I had sliced right through the tendon. When they told me that the only way to fix it was to cut a section of tendon out of my wrist and reattach to my finger, and even that only had a 50/50 chance of working, I decided that I could live with the way it was. And that was about $20,000 worth of knives ago, so it really didn't influence me other than making me slightly more careful (still wasn't the end of knife related accidents).

I cut my left index finger to the bone on a coldsteel voyager with 50/50 serrations. My supervisor at the time wigged out and carried me to the hospital. The stiches and the novacane shot hurt worse.

On the same job, we were pulling up unused CAT-5 Cabling from a vacated floor where I am now working. They had cable runs the size of small tree branches, 25-30 pieces of cbl tie-wrapped together. I had to break the tie-wrapps, but since no one had wire cutters, out pops my AFCK I was using at the time. It breezed right thru the ties right into my chest about 1.25 inches. I almost slices off my right nip. The scar reminds me how stupid i was when i was younger. I was smart and hid that one from the boss and fixed it with papertowls and duct tape.

Then there was the time I cut my thumb off in the bandsaw, they sowed it back on.......But I digress.....thatr was not a knife:D

Hell, I have so many old "knife scars" on my hands, that if they were all added together along with all the bleeding these cuts represented, I'd look like a survivor from the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"...But I still use my knives.

I lopped half the skin off the knuckle of my index finger with my Endura. I was cutting through some paper, and misjudged where my knife and right hand were in relation to each other. Made the swipe, took the skin off and cut through the paper before I realized what I'd done. Just a neat little divot a little smaller than a dime. It took a long time to get the bleeding stopped, and a few months before it healed. I'm surprised at how small the scar is now. I now make sure I know where my hands and my knives are.

I also have a couple scars on my toes from knives that I dropped while flipping them. One habit I've grown out of.

So many scarss from the wrists down, and I can't even remember where they all come from. But I remember Normark knife all the way to the bone... Several palm, nuckle. But really, ,probably most are work related - sheet metal, wire. Both palms cutting a horse loose from barbed wire...

But cut enough to quit? Still got two hands, two feet, ten fingers, ten toes. All work... mostly. No reason to quit - I can still hold, open and close a knife...

I respect knives and guns. Never cut myself and never shot myself. Of course I shoot them and use them, but never "play" with them. I like the Chris Reeve slogan. Think Twice cut once. I know if I ever cut myself enough to require a doctor visit, my wife will have sold my knives before I get back home. She already dislikes them a lot for some reason.

I've cut myself many times bad enough for any mere mortal to give up on knives, but me, never.:D

Hey Guys..

Giving up knives because you cut yuorself is like saying...

I fell off my bike, so I'm giving up bikes,, or

I crashed my car, so I'm not driving anymore,, or
