who here carries a camera?

I have a Cannon Power Shot A1200 HD, it works pretty good for an inexpensive point and shoot with a HD video option. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post em' up here for ya' all.

For long hikes I carry a Nikon D60 with an 18-70 and a 55-200/VR. It's a lightweight kit and if something happens to it I can replace it for a few hundred dollars.

Lol, I don't think everyone here would consider $1,300.00 in the realm of a few hundred dollars...more like a few hundred dollars times 3 or 4. I know that if I saw that as a few hundred dollars I'd be carrying a D800 with an 80-400mm VR lens out there and only because a D4 would be way too heavy for hikes.

A lot of the time I carry a Nikon D3000 and similar lens set up. It's a "few hundred dollars" cheaper and I still carry a warranty on it that as long as I bring back the majority of the pieces I get a new camera.

I bought these cheap. Used D60 $260. Used 18-70 $110. Refurb 55-200/VR $150. I usually buy my first tier gear new and protect it well. This is a toss about kit that I feel free to take risks with.

Ah, understood. I need to look into more used stuff for playing around with, but mainly I just want to pick up a new D7000 body and some used lenses. The lenses I have now were bought new and warrantied so as long as I got the 7000 new all of my other gear would be covered then use the 3000 and used lenses for playing around. The 3000 has paid for itself about 10 times now so probably time to take the next step up.

I usually carry about 20-40 pounds of various camera equipment. (I photograph nature for a living.)

When I'm not carrying the serious equipment, I can still make solid photos with my phone. Here are a few examples of what can be done even with a just a phone camera:

Holy Jeez that definitely is an example of the user and not the gear. I don't think i can even get that with a 1k DSLR. I know there's a lot of factors but a tutorial doing this would be nice.

Thank you.

I'm in the process of writing an ebook about how to make your best phone pictures, right now.

I usually have a camera of some sort with me. I "always" have my phone camera, but I've been known to carry others too. ;)
This particular shot was taken with a Sony Nex-5 while out in the desert.

I do some hiking in the SW and mostly carry a Canon 5D2 DSLR with a 24-70 lens. I just use a neck strap and even though it gets tiring at least the camera is always ready. I don't hike much more than 6 miles at a time but there are always ups and downs. If I were to buy a new camera it would be the Panasonic GH2, comes highly recommended from a friend that does adventure photography.

It's really all about the grey-matter behind the camera. Nowadays, so much can happen in post with even a very humble camera web-based publications can look magnificent.

It's when you start printing large (> 8x10) that the differences in gear become glaringly obvious.

Either way, evolute you've some beautifully composed images. Well done!!!

Jeesh you guys inspired me to try photography, as if knives, shooting was not an expensive hobby already.

Thanks, Mike.

I could've done these about as well with pretty much any of the current or previous generation of iPhones, Android phones, Blackberry phones, Windows phones, Nokia Symbian phones, other smart phones, etc.

Hopefully, my book will be done, soon.

My phones not as smart as yours.

I hope you let us know when the book's available.
