who here HATES torx screws?

Torx are great.

Who here hates SLOTTED?

And who hates Phillips just a little less than Slotted?
Add allen screws to my hate list. They round out too easily. Especially in the small sizes.

Torx are the best.

so... i stand alone. so be it!

the smallest two drivers on my benchmade blue box keep getting bent up. that's my biggest peeve. i've never seen torx wrenches at a store before, so i've always had to special order a blue box to work on my knives. also, i've never seen torx screws anywhere else other than on knives and i think it's lame to have tools laying around that are only applicable to knives.

i feel like there is very little practicality of using torx heads. flathead/phillips/allen screws are considerably more common and i feel like it's unlikely anyone outside of the knife-guru realm would have the proper drivers to remove/tighen them. on the other hand, flathead/phillips are about everywhere, and allen wrenches aren't hard to come by either.

squarehead is the best and when i rule the world, my method of screwing is taking over. ;)

Torx is idiot proof. The screwdriver that fits is the one that's correct and wont damage the head when your turn

I think that it's the best screw head going. Its hard to find the T-4, T-5, etc bits but I bought a cheap set on Ebay that works great.

There's a company called GRK that makes the greatest wood screws ever invented and they are all unstrippable Torx Heads.

I can't imagine what's not to like with the exception of finding those small drivers

Q: pardon me if this has already been answered 10000000000x, but how do you guys heat up your loc tite before removing screws?

With heat, of course.

Just use a hairdrier or something. I don't heat it, though. Steady, firm pressure eventually breaks it, and can also be used to slightly tweak the pivot tightness without breaking the loctite, since I use the red stuff.

For torx drivers (and other bit heads I use in my driver handle), I got my equipment from www.wihatools.com.

squarehead actually is quite nice. i have had a lot of experience with this type and i never once stripped a tool or screw with it. i like it.

that said, i like torx okay, though to be honest, all screwtypes kinda suck. i want a blank-head screw that magically tightens and loosens based on thought alone.

What happens when Murphy's Law strikes and someone interrupts your thought process of unscrewing/screwing these ThoughtScrews, and it:
A. Goes flying off into the unknown?
B. Tightens too far and strips its own threads?
C. Does something other bizarre thing because it's controlled by suddenly disrupted thought patterns?

I will admit that while telekinesis would be handy, too much could go wrong if the subconscious had any weight in the matter.

i hate flathead, it keeps slipping off

philips is ok, but that's mainly because i'm used to it.

i hate allen, they round out way too much.

torx is by far my favorite. my only grip is on smaller torx that are screwed in really tight, sometimes you can warp the torx head on the screwdriver.

Those of you having trouble finding smaller torx sets:

I got this from AG Russel, and it works great. It comes with an extra attachment head, a T6/T8 torx head, which will fit pretty much any knife you want to work on.

and garlic, a soldering iron works fairly nicely as well.

Your problem is definitely due to using Benchmade's blue box. It's a piece of crap. I got one as my first Torx driver, too, and it's stripped out just as badly.

Got the Husky driver at Home Depot, and I've never had Torx problems again. You've prolly spent as much on replacement Blue Boxes as you would've on a really nice set from an online store ;)

I just can't resist.

Slotted........not worth the effort to strip the head.

Allen...........a step up from slotted, and a step up from nothing is still nothing.

Phillips.........one braindead step up from an allen. Why the hell does everyone think that any size phillips bit will take out any size phillips screw?

Torx............they used to call these bristol wrenches when I was in the military some 25 years ago. They work. Nuff said.

Tamper resistant torx......the real deal. That little stud in the center lines you up, keeps you straight, and brings you almost the same amount of satisfaction as stomping the living shizizzle out of that little blue box set.

Midget......step up to reality and buy a real set of tools.
Not that you are too short to reach the counter at Home Depot.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I really like the set of drivers I got from Wiha tools, I think it is the Power Drive line. They come in every size you could need for knives, and I have yet to strip a head.

BTW, torx are used in other places too. Automotive work, computers and other electronics are just somethings that come to mind. Basically it is just a simple way to keep the average idiot out as he will just cause more problems. If yoy are smart enough to find the right size and type of driver then you can probably take the thing apart and get it back together.

I have used boiling water to loosen loctite, just make sure everything is dry afterwards of course.

I am also a torx fan. With a little focus there is not much risk of stripping them whereas I am always wondering if the driver is going to slip on the more common types like phillips.

And if the wrenches are giving out before the screws as in the case of the blue box, I'd say that would be a positive for the toughness of the torx and you need some wrenches of similar quality.

It is true that they are uncommon tools so you have to buy the wrenches just for your knives, but really a nice set of torx wrenches is very cheap compared to most other knife related costs (sharpeners, etc.) and you can use them to adjust / take down just about any knife you buy.

I hate the tamper resistant screws and drivers. Irritating on principle, plus too easy to get the screw head or the driver gunked up with something.

They are tempered, and work very well. You can order Wiha online.
