In your opinion, who is the knifemaker that inspired you? Which legendary person do you look up to the most?

In my case it would have to be the group I met and have read about over the years. Hugh Bartrug, Jim Batson, Engnath, Fogg, too many more I can't name at the moment.

Lets see. Right here from the board I can think of Bruce Evans, and Bruce Bump....jeez.....too many great ones to list.

For me it is about a quality piece, as well as an aesthetically pleasing piece. I like looking at other folks work, because it makes me strive to try to equal the accomplishments of others who are much more skilled than me.

That's a tough one. I guess I would have to say Rudy Ruana and Harvey Draper. My dad had collected some of their knives and that's where I got the idea that I could make my own. I still salivate over my dad's Ruana "Crockett Bowie". It's rough in fit and finish but it utterly reeks of character. I can study it for hours at a time.

More recently I would have to say that I am very impressed with Ed Fowler's knives as well as Bill Burke's. The performance is incredible.

I would have to say my New England influence comes from makers here in New England. Bill McHenry, Jason Williams, Ralph Selvideo, Richard Wright and Stephen Olszewski. This is where it started!

:grumpy:  :grumpy: Why isn't anybody mentioning my name!:grumpy:  :grumpy:

:D ;) :D Man I crack myself up....lol

Feel better Laredo ?
Wait a minute, I was here before you so ...Everyone but Laredo ;)

Seriously the makers who participate in this forum. I came here pretty much right when the place had just gotten a good start. I found it doing a search on yahoo for knife kits or knifemaking. I didn't have a clue that knives were such a big industry or that knifemaking was so popular. I'd never heard of anybody short of a few names here there, and I didn't really know who they were or what they did.
Basically I thought I had an off the wall idea and was going to have to figure out everything on my own. I got a lot of help here, and got to see a lot of really cool knives.

Loveless,Moran,Engrath,Scagel,Luckett, and so many others got my blood to flowing in the beginning, but all the fine folks that participate in the forums have keep it going.

Hull,Primos,Caffrey,Johnson,Fitzerald,Claibourne,...etc. I owe a special thanks for all the encouragement, tolerance, and patience they have shared.

The reason I asked is that I'm possibly writing a book. Currently, I'm working on a sample chapter to send in and hopefully things go well. The beginning of each chapter is going to have a quote from a prominent knifemaker, but there are so many greats out there. Tough decisions.

If it's for a book I think that it should be divided by fixed blades and folders, and then sub sections of each, fighting knives, bowies, automatics, ect. Did you know that Bill McHenry made the first screw together folder?

I totally agree with Rick. These two knifemakers have totally got my attention and respect. I have read and watched Mr. Fowler so much that I almost feel like I have known him all of my life.

Well it goes back a spell, The Late an Great Cooper.
But that there is many more. Bruce B you got that
right about Audra:D

I will definitely chose makers to fit the chapter they go in. Hopefully everything goes as planned. If the publisher likes the sample chapter, then it's a go.

Lets see here,Alex Daniels,Harvey Dean,Tim Hancock,Buster Warenski,Roger Green,Jim Batson,Don Fogg,Rob Hudson,My best Friend and coach Ted McMinn,Bruce Bump...And then of course all you guys here on the forums who give me allot of inspiration and encouragement to pursue my Dream of the perfect knife (never gonna happen,But is something to strive for)

Bruce

I would bet all these makes mentioned would
"say no it's not me" and could think of someone
besides themselves.
so it would have to be the other maker
of course, mentioned or not here.
That make any cents?
