Who is your favorite lesser-known maker

Ooo...I have to put another point in for Bob Papp. Some of the cleanest stuff I have seen. Too bad I found him after he retired.

I have one of Gene's knives as well, very nice and he was great to deal with. I even got a free mug out of the deal.

"Lesser" known? ;) How about Bud Weston? Canadian knifemaker living and working in Czech Republik. Does quite a few collaborations with Josef Rusnak (art knives). Sells out at every European show he attends, yet is barely known in North America.

Charlie Morris doesn't make knives anymore. I just spoke with him last month. I have had a few of his knives and was looking into getting another. But he said he has completely stopped making them altogether for health reasons. I still have one of his knives and would like to get another.

I bought a stag handled WARREN GOLTZ knife a few years back from Win. At the time it was just another stag drop point, but the more I (or others) handle it, the more the detail to his finishing is appreciated. I've had local makers pick it up and look at it over and over, and they note some of the more subtle details and express their admiration for what he was going. I don't think he was a prolific maker, and I know he's been retired for health and other reasons, but if anyone out there has any of his knives, I'm interested.

This post is for durwood. Post #58 daniel built four of his five master test knives. The two you posted. And two hunters. One damascus that went with the two you posted to Dan O'malley. I have the carbon hunter. I bought it long before the show opened. This all went down at Blade show 2005. i'm afraid he stoped paying his dues. He is not in our new directory. And that's to bad. Daniel is a friend. L.B.

Matt Roberts just passed his JS.
J. Neilson, not exactly lesser known.
Sean Ohare is a great answer too.
John Barker is a stock removal guy just starting out and his work is pretty amazing for a new guy.

I was just up in Montana and saw Tim Hancocktalking about how HE makes knives---I don't know about lesser known, but I love his work.

I think Jim Rodebaugh makes a classic knife by the traditions, and I think he trained with Hancock. So I think his work reflects some of the mastery and sheer elegance of a Hancock knife. He is in the process of making a knife for me.

I agree with Danbo...once the get known, you can't get their knives

I recently got in to custom knife collecting and use. I got my first knife from Jay Fisher. He also started a custom knife for me.

I realy like the Japanese style stuff that Gary Bradburn has been doing the last few years.

I just happend to be browsing this great forum when I read someone mentioning me as one of their "under the radar favorites" THANKS! and then I read that I dont make knives anymore. I dont post here hardly at all but I still do make knives, not as much as I did in the past. I actually Have been making linerlocks latley and many hard use,PRATICAL fishing knives. also I work in brooklyn now with a good friend doing high end architectural fabrication. hopefully I will have some sort of affordable folder in the near future thanks to our water jet.
oh and my favorite "unknown" makers are anyone who makes their shit from the heart. and if it's sharp as hell!
thanks everyone

Pretty sure that he is Mike Johnson, from the names mentioned, Coop.

Best Regards,

Thanks STeven! Now I get it....

And to that I must agree. I met Mike at the NYC show a year ago, and was duly impressed with his work.

I really like Jeremy Krammes and Chris J. Smith as far as lesser known makers go. I also really like Jim Smyth and Matt Roberts, but I don't know if I would consider either of them lesser known at this point.

Jerry Fisk, the ONE and only..

Damnit who's the otherguy, Arkansas Living Treasure..

Nope, can't remember.. But, I do like his knives.

Cook!!! It's J.R. Cook. I had to do a search to remember. (what an idiot,..)
