Who likes damascus?

I have to ask you damascus owners, do you guys actually use your knives? How does damascus hold up under normal daily use? I don't want to buy a safe - queen; I'd hate to get a damascus sebbie and then be afraid to carry it.
It's only a safe queen if you want it to be. They work very well as users. Of course, it often depends on the composition of the steel and the maker, but Devin Thomas damascus works great.

OK, good attitude. Thanks.

Maybe that also needs to be qualified with the nature of your "use".

Does the damascus pattern hold up well to cutting cardboard boxes or heavy rope where there's lots of abrasion (not just from the material, but also from dirt and grit in those)?

And I suppose cutting acidic fruit like oranges are out unless you don't mind carrying and reapplying the protective paste for afterwards.

You can scratch up a damascus blade just like anything else. I say it just gives it character, but it definitely isn't as noticeable as like a mirror finish. It will cut through rope and cardboard just fine. If you're worried about rust than just get stainless damascus.

Well, I have a damascus TNT on the way (Devin Thomas stainless), so I guess my questions will soon be answered.

I'm the odd man out ( in more ways than one  ). I don't really care for damascus. It just doesn't "do it" for me.

I read somewhere, heck, maybe on Devon Thomas' site, that his stainless Damascus is the prefered steel used by the Alaskan fishermen. If it's good enough for saltwater fishing, it's good enough for me! I carry and use a large classic with his fireball stainless Damascus blade. It just keeps cuttin and cuttin. Haven't sharpened her yet and I've had it sense July.

Oops, well, I'm close, sort of... :)
