Who likes the new Fred Perrin PPT?

I have one on order and can't wait to get it in hand. Looks like a supremely useable and carryable knife to me! But I like my knives well built and solid.:D

Sacha, thank for posting here! I love to hear from the collaborators on projects like this. Any other history/background/philosophy you can give us on this particular design?

Like Deacon said... The PPT is not lefty friendly. I had hoped the clip would at least be swappable but that has turned out to be quite a disappointment. I'd be willing to forgive the partially obscured thumbhole but why couldn't they make the clip reversible? It just requires a bit of notching on the other side. I usually buy 2 of every knife but I'm guessing if I do get one it's going to be more of a display piece rather than a user. Aesthetically pleasing though.

Was able to handle one on Friday up at New Graham Knives (great place by the way)!!

While I liked the knife overall, centered blade, handle felt great, nicely made, etc., it just didn't do it for me. As others have posted it just seemed more like a self defense blade than an EDC. Nothing wrong with that I just found that after handling it, it wasn't what I was looking for.

Couple of points:

1. Although the sheet that comes with the knife describing the model says the clip can be switched, it simply can't be. It will only fit/work on the one side.

2. Cat and Chicago models were not made by the same maker that make the GB, Sages, and the PPT. Sal has said this many times. I've owned all of these, and there's simply no comparison whatsoever between the Cat/Chicago and the light years-nicer GB, Sages, and PPT. Regardless of the country, there are always some great manufacturers, and some not-so great as well.

As far as the Bushcraft goes, I haven't the slightest where that was made, but I seem to recall that unfortunate situation was because of the supplier of the wood, not the maker of the knife.

As far as the PPT goes, I think it's awesome. Feels like a custom and like the GB, a lot of beautifully finished Spyderco for the money.

The scales are G10 I believe

My bad, I meant if the frame lock is titanium...?

Really doubtful, considering how heavy it is. And, the description up on Spyderco's website doesn't mention what the frame lock and liner are made out of. I'm assuming they'd want us to know if it were Titanium. :)

I got my PPT yesterday and have been playing around with it. It’s a pretty unique knife; very well-made and a neat design.

The liners seem to be steel. They have a cool matte finish and look like Ti, but they’re magnetic (and heavy, though they’re somewhat skeletonized). My sample weighs around 5.1 oz. total.

The lock-side liner is a little bit thicker than the Bradley’s. Spring strength seems about the same as the Bradley, but the PPT is a lot easier to unlock: more of the lock bar is exposed on the PPT and its corners are rounded off.

Here’s a pic with the lock-side scale off. You can see some of the holes to reduce weight (the other liner has them too). There’s a curved rectangular cutout at the bottom of the lock bar that’s similar to the Bradley’s. The square notch on the end of the handle is where the clip bends over.

Something else you can see in the pic is that there’s a flat area on the scale. That’s where the bottom of the clip rests, so it doesn’t snag or drag when you draw the knife from your pocket. It’s a nice little detail. The edges of the scales are also chamfered, though you can’t really tell from the pic.

Anyways, I’m not sure how much I’ll end up EDCing it, but it’s a definitely a sweet little knife. Congrats to the designers and makers. And thanks for posting here, Sacha! Those are some awesome knives.

cerulean, thanks for posting that pic and answering my questions. I ordered one.

Thank's. Actually I'm very proud of this project and the look of the spyderco PPT.
I'm sorry for my poor english vocabular but I'll try to post some infos or interesting pics of the custom PPT.:D

It certainly looks sweet, and I'm eager to lay hands on one.

But what do mean "little"?

My first one will be here on Monday and I'm stoked :) I have a second one coming with a later batch too . . . I'm really looking forward to this knife but certainly I can't know if I will keep a knife until I handle it. Even I can't 100% predict if I will like a knife just by a picture.

I have a few other new Spydercos coming too:

Super Leaf
Balance
Para 2
Two CF Lums
One large Lum
Two Sage 3's

It's going to be a good year for new Spydercos :D

I have one and I love it, is there any chance of different colour scales being made available? Would the custom scales you make even fit the Spyderco version?

“Little” is pretty relative. It seems small to me compared to other knives in the same weight class, like the hollow ground Manix 2. Next to a Military, the PPT looks really short. It’s an extremely beefy folder though.

You're wellcome. I can show you an image with comparaison of two different shape of what the proto should have Been.
on the top (S2) the PPT as you all know it. Down (S1) an other shape which wasn't comfortable in hand. Scales and blade were re-designed to fit exactly what Fred, Philippe and myself were looking for.

WOW. Thank you Sacha for posting those comparative blueprints.
Hard to see suche a huge difference.
Sometimes ergos are just a matter of wisdom knowledge and craftmanship.

The final result is a wonderful knife !

cheers
