who lives in florida???

i live in apopka fl. n/w orange co

I remember back in the 1970's while fishing on Rodman's Resovior near Gainsville with several old timer buddies and having them regale me with tales of the legendary Bass fishing in Lake Apopka in they're early years on that lake in the late 1930's and early 1940's. According to them 8-10 pound largemouth were average size and both of these gents claimed to had taken near 20 pounders out of Apopka back then.. Personally and unfortunately I never got to fish that lake prior to the chemical poisoning discharged their in the 1980's. :(

How is the lake today?

Skeeters Big Biscuits came on platter plates and back then you could snag several eggs, home fries, coffee and one of those beheameth Big Biscuits for like 2 bucks..
Yep you always kept a few bucks in your pocket to be able to eat. Of course if you didn't, a plate of hash browns was only about a buck, and was pretty damned big.

The fishing hole is history along with the 75 acres of forest property and the old homestead we lived in. Its been cleared, sub-divided and developed..

Along with about everthing else west of town.

My dad grew up in Newberry and when I was a kid the drive from the Oaks Mall to Newberry was so long and boring. With nothing on it except the golf course and a store in Jonesville. Now Newberry Road is four lanes and lit up almost all the way. Progress indeed.

Remember the old bar named Rosie's (I think) that is where the kangaroo is now? It was a 2 story wood building and I use to think it looked so neat with the great big live oaks around it.

I grew up almost to Jonesville and as a kid the Oaks mall plaza wasn't built yet and there was nothing past the interstate.

It definitely stinks what has happened. I can barely pull out of my driveway due to all the traffic on the hard road.

Knew it well.. The Oaks Apartments, which was located directly behind the Oaks Mall, was where I landed when I first came to town in 1978.. Had some good times in and around that area back in those days. There always seemed like plenty of doin's was afoot on any given evening without having to travel uptown..

I recall some real lively Wednesday nights at the Chelsea's Street Pub(south side of the mall) during there weekly Jalapeno eating contests. Truth be known, I'd lay down odds that's where and when my stomach ulcer took root. :( :) We sure did win a vat load of pitchers and free pub food supper on many occasions from them dawg-gone prize winning scorching hot peppers right straight out of the old wooden barrel :D :D

Then there was always the meat market just across the street on Newberry Road at the ABC lounge with they're .10 cent Comacosie's and young female clientele.. :p :) ;)

During the day after classes were completed we used to hunt bag fulls of Cotton Tails and Bob White Quail about 10 miles due west on Newberry from the Oaks mall in a huge series of fields on a farmers property. These fields were uncultivated and just full of briar's. I remember how cool the farmer was with us. A bunch of us just had the stones to drive up and ask his permission one day and he said yes.. He wrote us a note with his name and phone number and told us that we were to run any other trespassers off the property that we encountered. Good times.

Also, I still recall Poe Springs located north of Gainesville as being one of the cleanest, clearest freshwater cold fed springs I ever had the pleasure of swimming in, by far!. Way better than Itchatucnee and others in that area, IMHO.. Just the thing to cool off in during the hot dog days of summer whilst in Gator country.. The same old boy, his old dog and his woman were out there nearly every weekend. No need for a cooler or ice with that dog nearby. We used to just chuck our 6 packs of beer into the bottom of the main spring pool where the water was the coldest around 20 feet down, and in several minutes that beer was primed and ready to swill. That old boy had that fine dog trained to dive into the springs and fetch our beers on command. That dog was a true champion. :D

I agree. Development has been way over done, to the point that the place has lost a lot of the old charm it once exuded..

Its fun to reminisce on some of the wonderful times and places though. Thanks for that.
