I actually dont own one and never have:( However, I am going to buy one I just want some opinions on them. What is your favorite and what one would serve best for survival/outdoor uses. Building traps, skining/cleaning game, food prep, ect.... you get the point. So, which one? Thanks

I own two SAKs. One Wenger Hiker I got in 1984. A good knife (can`t see why a Vic should be better). It was used as my EDC to about 1996. It suffers from a cracked handle and a lost thootpick, but the rest is almost as new.
The other SAK is a Victorinox Forester I bought a year ago. This is an even better knife. Bigger, and with a lock blade.
The main tools for me on a SAK is the blade, saw and the awl. The rest of the tools are just bonus.
I sometimes use the screwdriver but have never used the cork screw.

There are however better knives for preparation of game and food, but for your use I would recommend one of the bigger models; Forester, Rucksack and so on, if you are set on buying a SAK.

I have two, Victorinox Swiss Champ and Swiss ChampXL. I never go anywhere without one or the other. I use it several times a day. The larger knives would be a better choice for your intentions.

  Hi,

I carry a Vic Pioneer for heavy work as it has a thicker blade and also a Vic Officer. I have another half dozen or so which I got as handouts form suppliers. I just bought a Vic Farmer which will replace my Pioneer some day.
Not a day goes by without having to use either knife. I also carry a Vic Officer in my backpack when I hike plus a Puma Outdoor fixed blade.

SAK rules,

Derick

Have had and used my Swisschamp for 29 years now:eek: It to survived 21 years in the USMC/ USA. I think I'll keep it:D

Sak's are about all the pocket knife I carry any more, aside from standard traditional slip joint pocket knives like stockmen and barlows. I have several that take turns as edc knives but my favorites are my old pioneer, and my hiker. A tinker is my travel knife, and there is always a classic on my key ring.

A sak or two, and a 12 inch Ontario machete is my standard woods and camping cutlery. Sometimes a mora gets carried along, but a sak soldier and machete are a tough combo to beat.

Try visiting SOSAK.

I EDC a Vic Farmer, a Vic Rucksack lives in my BOB and I have other SAKs scattered around in my bicycle bags, my truck etc. The Farmer is probably my favorite, I like the Alox scales. JMHO
Gene :D

For hunting its hard to beat the Vic. Hunter. This is one of the larger (111mm) locking blade SAKs featuring a special gutting blade, a combination can/bottle opener/ screwdriver and a wood saw. The saw is great for cutting bone as well as wood.

If you want something to less bulky to carry in your pocket, I would suggest one of the 3 layer Vic. SAKs with the wood saw, specifically the Camper, Hiker or Farmer. The Camper and Hiker are both red plastic handled SAKs, the only difference between them is that the Camper has a cork screw and the Hiker has a Philips screw driver. The Farmer as Alox (aluminum) scales and has an excellent awl in place of the small blade and no toothpick/tweezers and no tools on the back.

For the chores you have listed, several will do the job, but one was designed for them. Victorinox lockblade Hunter

Black Vic. Trekker rides in an Uncle Mikes single mag pouch with a small fire steel. A few cotton balls for emergency tinder ride in the bottom of the pouch also. Whole package weighs less than my Gerber multitool and takes up the same amount of space. When I teach basic firemaking with the scouts they all want to get the same setup.

I just got a swiss lite or something like that, it has a led on it and I use it all the time.

I want one with a large plane blade, large wood saw, can and bottle opener, awl, and maybe a smaller blade. I would like the larger balde to lock open. So, I guess the hunter model looks good.

oooow oooow Me I do I love my sak, my huntsman Light opens every beer thats not a twist off, and I love that light for findin things when the power goes out. Fantastic lil knife.

I carry my Vic Hiker daily but was wondering if the Farmer is thinner or the same thickness. If it's thinner I'd pick one up, anyone know?

My wife and daughter gave me my Explorer for fathers days, a few years ago. I really like its size for what it has to offer. I have been looking at one of the One Haned Trekkers, maybe a future purchase.

The Farmer is thinner by almost the thickness of one of the Hiker's scales. The Framer is also about 2 mm longer and the main blade is slightly thicker.

If you only want one for outdoor use, I agree with those who recommended a locking blade 111mm size.

I have dozens of SAK's that I rotate in my EDC, but if I was knowingly only gonna have one for outdoor use, get a 111mm size lockback with a saw.

Two words... Alox Farmer! I am not a big SAK fan in general but I LOVE this knife. The alox SAKs are in a class all by themselves and the Farmer is a great set of tools. Not too much and not too little. t's juuuuuuust right. :D
