Who makes and sells a good electo etcher.

First vid is by Nick Wheeler, the second is unknown but I love it. Just a single battery and salt water!!!

FWIW- the unit I have, a Marking Methods 300k (shown in my crappy little video that zaph posted above :foot:) is WAY overkill for most knifemakers, myself included.

Back when I got mine, it was pretty much the standard among all the knife makers I could find to ask, and I got a really good deal on it from a knife maker that switched to a stamp.

If you were to buy one now, new, I think they're like $700-800! It's made for production marking--- like, for instance, marking 1,000 golf clubs a day. ;) It's certainly worked very well for me, but it is overkill.

Sounds to me like zaph's unit would work great, and the PP seems to get a lot of votes as well. I put my etcher on "#3" (on a #1-5 variable dial) and haven't moved it in about 10 years.

BTW- Adam--- Love your mark, that's very good looking! :)

I have Zaph's etcher an am really happy with it. I use the Q-tips and they work well, but I want to try a pad with it as well.

Here is a an etch. I tap the button about 10 times in a spot then move to the next spot and repeat until the entire stencil has been covered, then I do it 2x times. It leaves a decent deep etch.

My picture kinda sucks but you can get the feel how the etch is.

Thanks man. I have to give credit where it's due though. As Karl mentioned in another thread, Patricia Bruno at IMG-Electromark is a true artist. I gave her a good idea of what I was looking for and let her do her thing. I wanted a really professional looking design using my name and I think she nailed it.

Anyone know how Andy from Fiddleback gets such deep etches?

I think it's just a matter of power output. I'm getting etches that are about .010" deep after practicing a bit. My technique is similar to Nick's vid. I'm not sure of the exact voltage, but I'm running pretty close to full power output on my machine while etching. Mine is 0-24 volts out. I do a 3 count on and 1 count off (for degassing) in etch mode. I do this about 20 times. In mark mode, I turn down the voltage a bit and do the same, but only have to do it about 10 times to get a nice black mark. I finally figured out that if I get any slight ghosting, that it will clean up pretty easy with 2000 grit paper and doesn't really effect the scotch brite finish I put on my knives. As long as I go really deep with the etch, I don't have to worry about removing any of the black deposit from marking when I do the clean up.

My own ether is very much overkill, but it's a very cool machine. A LectroEtch VT-15A AC/DC etcher with intermittent (pulsing) etch option, and foot pedal operation with timer.

Ron Claiborne in knoxville makes one Steve. Give Eric a call in St. Clements, He got one this year and is happy with it.
