Amazed that no one has mentioned Case yet. There is no reason to spend that much money for a knife unless you want to. If you are going to baton with a knife you need a small hatchet instead. A Mora will be all the survival knife you need.
Not trying to be a smart @$$ but the OP asked about stainless survival knives. I am assuming he meant purpose-designed survival knives, which to me presumes not only knife functionality but also durability in rough uses. Now while I would likely still be using a Case if I were still trapping commercially, they do make nice Bowie, hunting and skinning knives. However in my opinion Case really doesn't offer anything I have seen, at least lately, that I would personally consider a stainless survival knife. As a woodsman, wildnerness skills experimentor, and wilderness skills instructor in a temperate rain forest, this has been a subject of personal interest to me for several years. I have tested a LOT of S35VN the last few years because it is my my favorite so far. Other stainless steels I like are typically more expensive. In time I settled on Ed Martin as my go to knife maker for S35VN, and he makes a few designs that work well for my needs. Yes, I suppose $300 is a lot for a knife to some, but for me I am not just paying for the knife, I am also paying for the confidence I have in his knives to perform very well under extreme conditions. That and my life in the deeper woods are worth spending the money on for me. As always other opinions will differ. It's all in one's wants and needs in the tools they purchase. I will admit I do like Fallkniven blades, but their knives with other than rubber handles get just as pricey as customs, and I'm really not crazy about the rubber handles. I have a friend currently putting a micarta handle and brass hilt on my old A-1 for me.
