Who makes the best serrations?

I would have to say SPYDERCO and SOG own some of both and i gotta tell ya its a close call as to whos the better of the two.

Has anyone seen some comparative data on the cutting ability of serration vs. serration vs. plain on ropes or other appropriate material?

Spyderco. That being said, I did have a fully serrated CRKT large Apache in ATS-34 that had the NASTIEST cutting edge of any knife I've owned. That thing could draw blood from across the room!

Serrations are tough to Sharpen. Wheck out www.CeraHone.com for a ceramic coated aluminum. They have a taper that is tapered from 1/8 to 3/8". It's ideal for working into serrated edges. Its unbreakable to boot because of the aluminum core.

Spyderco! Having said that, there is one thing cool about Cold Steel's serrations: the zipping sound they make when cutting cardboard.

Spydie serrated blades are no doubt very good, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Microtech's are even better. They cut like no other serrated blades I have used.

Just one knifeknut's opinion.:)

Sheeeeeesh :)

I thought this thread looked familiar....wasn't until I saw my name as the thread starter that I remembered :D

Just to keep ya'll updated, I never did buy a serrated knife, although I keep thinking it would be a good idea. Based on these answers, though, and other input, I will probably be picking up a serrated Delica in VG-10 steel as a cheap, yet effective knife for cutting cardboard and other things where I really don't care how the cut looks.

HAHAHAHAHAHA What goes around comes around it seems...
Since everyone else has said it before, I'd just as well say it now. You can't go wrong with a Syderco knife.
Look at the serrations that most of the other companies copy and you have to conclude Spyderco is still #1, after all, if they didn't work well, no one else would use them.
I know I used to think that serrated blades were no good until I tried my buddy's Spyderco and then I was a BIG TIME true believer.

While I like a lot of Benchmade's plain edges, I stay away from their serrations. Not due to performance, though. I've yet to see anyone sharpened them effectively without destroying the pattern, unless Spyderco or someone else makes a double hollow-ground rod of the correct size. Besides, Spyderco's serrations far outperforms everything else. And with proper technique, the Sharpmaker can re-sharpen them without destroying the pattern.

When you think about it, any pattern that is not sharpener-friendly is simply a plain edge waiting to be born. Sharpen it enough and you will have, at best, a half-kris style edge. More than likely, it ends up being a plain edge.

So, even if another pattern does outperform Spyderco's, if it can't be easily maintained by the user, then it's a lesser design, IMHO.

I like Spyderco's serrations best because they are real jagged, as opposed to the shallow serrations of Benchmade and CRKT. Jagged serrations have much better shredding ability IMHO. Microtech also has good serrations.
