Who makes the sharpest knives?

In my experience, Emerson Knives are the sharpest directly from the factory. But I still put them on my Wicked Edge almost as soon as I get them.

Learn to sharpen and it doesn't matter. I found the Lansky guided rod system easy to learn and reliable.

I have read reports of sharp and dull from almost all manufacturers. My experience is that on the average Spyderco knives come pretty sharp. I've had SOG and Cold Steel that were sharp and some that weren't sharp. But it doesn't matter that much to me and it isn't a consideration for what knife I buy. The grind and edge angle are more important to me. I don't mind sharpening a knife that is relatively new but I like it better if I don't have to spend a lot of time reprofiling the edge. It took me a long time but I finally learned how to sharpen well enough for my uses.

Don't matter who makes the sharpest knife to me.

If their steel, grind and heat treat is right, I'll make it the sharpest knife you ever saw.

Scary sharp out of a box ...

I've seen a lot of new knives, production and custom, and have RARELY seen one that is "scary sharp." I did get a production Emerson once, that brought a drop of blood when I touched the edge very gently. Fortunately, Ernie actually provided a Band-Aid in the knife box. Very interesting...
:)

I've heard Rockstead knives come very sharp from there factory and they stay sharp for a long time. The only issue is that they are expensive.

If a knife comes from the factory sharp, you know it's edge geometry and steel are capable of at least that level of sharpness.

Cold Steel gets my vote for sharpest out of the box.

That's actually a great point, as most people just follow the factory grind when sharpening.

As said, you can almost always get them sharper. But if you want large, sharp and tactical, Cold Steel gets my vote

They are usually easy to touch up

And their grinds are excellent for slicing, in most cases

Older models included.

For pure shearing power, get a serrated one...

Spyderco is usually above the average sharpness in factory knives, too

Both plain and serrated

That said, believe it or not the absolute sharpest knife I ever got in the mail was Ontario rat 1. That thing was so sharp that, with the blade 9/10 of the way open, I could not push on it with my finger to open it the last 1/10...I wouldn't even try because I knew it would rather push through my skin than push the blade another half inch.

ok, i have to ask.....
How do you know what "most people" do?

I see this type of response often on the forum, people who know what "most people" do,need or dont need, like or dislike etc.

The sharpest factory edge is nothing near what can be done with a regrind, (Razor edge has done some great things for me) or a custom, or just taking the time yourself.

Shaving sharp is pretty sharp, but I'm talking whittling hairs and tree topping .... about knives that float through heavy plastic bags like they aren't even there., thatslice cardboard for months and still are shaving sharp... And sometimes for not a lot more than "factory"... I'm cheap... I admit it, but I'd rather have one knife like this than 4 or 5 cheaper factory ones.

Murray Carter, Yuna Knives, RJ Martin, Tom Krein are my top four sharpest knives delivered.

Production- Spyderco, Cold Steel, Microtech

Not sharp really doesn't cover it DK!! Got a brand new Sukhoi 2.0, absolutely perfect in every way......except the slight problem with the edge. Mine came with no edge at all. It was like they forgot to sharpen it at all.
Worst I've seen by far.
Sharp????
Spydie, Hogue, Brous, BM and Pro Tech. Have a bunch of each and never got a dull one.

Hands down. Rockstead.

I've got quite a few Emerson's and they are scary sharp but I'd still go with the Rockstead.

But if you can sharpen then you don't need to worry.

The sharpest knives out of the box I have ever seen by far are Scandinavian Puukkos, but then they are not tactical unless you are a viking. :)
