So the water-cooled plates are finally finished and tested!
Let me know what you think and if you have questions?
For the test:
- The thermal camera, used on the video, is for monitoring electronics. The Maximum registered temperature is 232.6 C and the minimum is -31C, so it shows correct temp between these two.
- The test is done with a 5 mm piece of N690. The piece has been surface ground, but not beveled, so that it has the close to maximum energy for the quench
- Temperature out of the oven is 1060 C
- The piece of N690 reached room temperature from 1060 C after around a minute. Smaller and beveled pieces will cool much faster. For beveled knives, additional air quench is needed, because some parts are not in contact with the plates!
- The temperature of the water was constant 8 C in and around 20C out of the plates. The plates were always cool to the touch
- A test of 7 knives in a row did not heat the plates above room temp
- The surface ground N690 piece did not show any warps or dimension changes. This method is ideal for making parallel and straight parts.
- An increase in hardness is noted, compared to the normal aluminum plates of 1 or 0.5. This is because the temp of the water-cooled plates remains constant. You will get the same hardness for the whole batch
- Using the plates was uninterrupted, which makes doing large numbers of knives fast and easy.
- Convenience of use for large number of knives
- Constant Rockwell hardness for the batch
- Minimizing warps
Beveled blades will need to be cooled with air, as not all the blade is in contact with the plates
Current pricing is $390. Shipping is calculated when I have your post code. If PayPal business is used, 6% ($24) fee is applied. Normal Swift transaction has no fee.
For the price, you get the following:
A set of CNC machined aluminum plates (9.85''/ 3.15''/ 1.6'') or 250 mm/ 80 mm/ 40 mm (the size of the plates can be adjusted to order at cost)
The plates are rubber sealed and can be disassembled for maintenance
32 feet of tubing (if some needs to be replaced with time)
Durable pneumatic connectors are installed and can be plugged or unplugged with a simple *CLIC*
The plates have mounting holes and can be installed to a vice or an arbor press horizontal or vertical
Thanks!
Nick
NB: The plates can operate with a simple aquarium pump, which is not included
